Wide of McGowan eating corgi with photographers in foreground\u003cbr/\u003eA British performance artist staged a bizarre protest against the royal family on Tuesday - by eating a dead dog in the middle of a busy street in London.\u003cbr/\u003eMark McGowan sat down at a pavement table and tucked into cooked corgi - the Queen's favourite animal. \u003cbr/\u003eTo make it more palatable, the corgi was turned into meat balls and served with salad.\u003cbr/\u003eMcGowan, who described himself as a vegetarian, looked physically ill as he chewed slowly through the first mouthful. He said the taste was disgusting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe protest was aimed at the Queen's husband, Prince Philip, after media reports said he beat a fox to death during a hunt. \u003cbr/\u003eThe royals denied the charge, and Britain's top animal-protection charity agreed there was no evidence to support it.\u003cbr/\u003eMcGowan told reporters he was seeking to raise awareness of the need to protect animals. \"Why is it that we allow people - especially people who are supposed to be ambassadors for this country - to treat animals with such disrespect,\" he asked.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explained that the corgi he consumed had died recently at a breeding farm. It hadn't been killed for the purposes of the protest. \u003cbr/\u003ePassers-by appeared confused that McGowan had chosen to express his support for animal rights by eating a dog. \"It's not a great
