Tilt down from fire place to wooden floor
Climate change has become a major global concern over the past year.
In May 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its fourth report, warning that global warming would increase.
The Geneva-based agency, the World Meteorological Organisation, said in April that temperatures around the world rose 2.46 degrees Fahrenheit above the average since 1880.
The concerns about climate change have led to increased interest in renewable energy which reduces the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere.
Carbon emissions are believed to play a major role in global warming.
However a recent report from the United States warns that renewable energy may not solve the world's fuel crisis.
Under the baking heat of the Portuguese sun a solar farm is offering an alternative to fossil fuels.
This scheme is an example of the world's growing interest in renewable energy and of the international campaign to reduce carbon emissions.
The European Union is hoping for a 20% reduction in emissions by 2020, a binding target of 20% for renewable in 2020, and a 20% reduction of energy consumption in 2020.
In Spain the city of Barcelona is turning to solar panels to meet some of the region's energy needs.
With more than 4.5 million people, the metropolitan area of Barcelona stands as one of the largest in Western Europe.
Nearly half the energy generated in the region comes from oil thermal plants, twenty percent from gas and twenty five from nuclear plants.
Even though the potential generation of today's solar technology is small compared with other renewable sources such as the wind, the authorities in Barcelona are launching an ambitious programme to install solar panels on most of the city's public and private buildings.
Environmental organisations, such as Friends of the Earth, are some of the loudest advocates of the use of renewable energy sources.
Nick Rau, an energy campaigner for Friends of the Earth, says renewables can meet our future needs, alongside conventional fuels.
He says a clear vision is needed to see the answers to our future energy needs.
On the other side of the Atlantic U.S. President George W. Bush wants to promote ethanol production in the Americas for biofuel.
In recent years that has led to an increase in corn production in Mexico and sugar cane in Brazil.
Biofuels, which are made from corn, palm oil, sugar cane and other agricultural products, are viewed by many as a cleaner and cheaper way to meet the world's soaring energy needs than greenhouse-gas emitting fossil fuels
In Brazil, annual ethanol production is projected to double by 2016 from today.
Already Brazil is a world leader in alcohol fuel, and expects to produce a record 5.34 billion gallons of ethanol in the current sugarcane season, up 13.5 percent from 2005 - 2006 season, according to recent figures from the Agriculture Ministry.
New more sucrose laden varieties are continuously being created.
Luis Eduardo Crespo, President Rio de Janeiro Sugarcane Producers Association says that the expansion of sugar cane cultivation will not threaten the local environment.
He says that around Rio de Janeiro state it is possible to double the production of sugar cane without harming the surrounding area.
Brazil has been creating bio-ethanol for cars for more than thirty years, thanks to a 1970s decision by Brazil's former military dictators to subsidise production and require distribution at the pumps, giving Brazil the built-in supply and distribution systems other countries lack.
Most drivers in Brazil choose ethanol, which is made from corn, sugar cane or other crops and is about half the price of gasoline in Brazil.
Eight out of every 10 new cars sold in the country are now flex-fuel models.
Another bio fuel that is being promoted as an alternative is corn-based ethanol.
Corn-based ethanol production has been steadily rising in the United States, prompting some of Mexico's farmers to increase production of their crops to meet that demand.
However some environmentalists and scientists are concerned.
Jesse Ausubel is the director of the Programme for the Human Environment Rockefeller University.
His report published in the Journal of Nuclear Governance, Economy and Ecology has cast doubt on the use of renewable energy sources.
Ausubel says biofuels are also not the answer as they have to be planted every year and depend heavily on government subsidies.
His report says that measuring the benefits of renewables in watts per square metre shows that renewable energy is false economy.
Nonetheless governments and farmer across the world are embracing bio fuels.
Indonesia's Riau province is the home to vast rainforests.
But now miles of jungle are giving way to acres of palm oil plantations.
Indonesia has the third largest forests in the world after Brazil and Congo, but the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says it believes the country is losing more than 1 million hectares of forests every year.
Much of these lost forests have been converted into palm oil plantations.
While the Indonesian government insists that palm oil is only being planted on land that was previously deforested or neglected, environmentalists claim that big companies prefer to chop down virgin forests because they can sell the logs to invest in palm oil plants.
To plant the palm oil trees, the peat land must be drained first by creating canals and also often by burning, and this resulted in the release of a high percentage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from below the peat into the atmosphere.
Elsewhere small towns or communities have taken matters into their hands by setting targets to cut their dependence on fossil fuels.
The quiet city of Vaxjo, in southern Sweden, decided in 1996 to get rid of fossil fuels.
Initially most people doubted the ambitious goal would have any impact beyond the shores of Lake Helga.
Yet the town has is attracting a green pilgrimage of politicians, scientists and business leaders from the U.S. to North Korea eager to learn about the city's environmental programme.
The lion's share of the emissions cuts have been achieved at the heating and power plant, which replaced oil with wood chips from local sawmills as its main source of fuel.
Wood is of no shortage in a nation like Sweden where large forests provide fuel. Ashes from the furnace are brought back into the forest to add nutrients. Not only does it generate electricity, but the cooling water that warms up in the process is used in a district heating system for homes and offices in Vaxjo.
Henrik Johansson is an Environmental Controller for the small city.
He says almost 90 per cent of the energy used for heating homes in the city comes from renewable sources.
The city's target is to cut emissions by 50 percent by 2010, and 70 percent by 2025, with the long-term goal of becoming completely free of fossil fuels in the following decades.
The British government has pledged to create more environmentally friendly homes and to make all new homes zero carbon by 2016.
Now a scheme's underway in Oxfordshire to buildi 'green' homes to educate the public about the advantages of eco-homes.
From the outside, this home which is half of a former eighteenth century-stone brewery, looks like a typical renovated cottage in the English countryside.
Older houses have a reputation as cold and drafty buildings - but this one is cosy inside.
Yet a highly efficient wood burning stove provides the heat for the under floor system which can retain the heat for 20 hours.
The original stone and lime mortar walls were insulated with sheep wool batts that are placed between wooden batons and faced with a German particle board composed of compressed sawmill waste which does not use formaldehyde glues.
The new extension at the back of the cottage is constructed of local unseasoned oak.
This home, and eighteen other 'green' houses opened their doors to visitors in the Oxfordshire as part of Britain's largest eco-homes 'Open Doors Weekend' to date.
The pilot project, which took place November 24-25, 2007, is designed to show visitors how to create a greener home.
Organizers the Climate Outreach Information Network
