investigation taking in three cities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe findings have even shocked the Russian medical establishment, which was already expecting the figures to be high.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say apart from direct alcohol poisoning, drinking alcohol is also associated with liver, heart and pancreatic diseases, as well as TB and pneumonia.\u003cbr/\u003eWorse still they say it's a major factor in other deaths caused by accidents and violence.   \u003cbr/\u003eMoscow's Red Square - packed with tourists against a backdrop of the colourful spires of St Basil's Cathedral. \u003cbr/\u003eBut on the streets there's always someone to be seen drinking alcohol.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors here say alcohol abuse is gnawing away at society and it's the main cause for differences in death rates between Russia and western Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eEastern Europe's most powerful nation has seen its population plummet since 1992 with AIDS, pollution and poverty among the main factors leading so many Russians to an early grave.\u003cbr/\u003eLife expectancy is decreasing sharply, now the average Russian man can expect to die by sixty, that's far less than in most of Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe figures illustrate a Russian tragedy largely invisible to outsiders, but researchers say it's devastating Russian society, claiming the lives of millions during what should be their most productive years.\u003cbr/\u003eRussians have recently been producing more babies, but demographers still warn the population is set to decline from 142 million today, to 110 million or less by 2050.\u003cbr/\u003eAlcohol, they say, is the main cause of this drastic and apparently unstoppable depopulation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Russians even have a word in language for drunkenness lasting more than two days - zapoi - it's scarcely surprising then that the rate of alcohol consumption here is the highest in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's impact can be seen here on the wards at this St Petersberg hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eThis unfortunate scene, medical researchers say, can be found at other hospitals across the land. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir findings published in The Lancet today claims unprecedentedly sharp fluctuations in Russian mortality rates are strongly linked to alcohol abuse.\u003cbr/\u003eThey analysed fifty thousand deaths in three industrial cities, between 1990 and 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal physicians also interviewed close relatives of those who'd died to determine contributing factors, such as their general health, drinking habits and social and economic level. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results are alarming. \u003cbr/\u003eAlcohol is responsible for more than half of all Russian deaths between the ages of fifteen and fifty-four. \u003cbr/\u003eCompare that to the average westerner. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the United Nations European men expect to live 17 years longer, to about 77 years.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen live nine years longer than their Russian counterparts, up to 82 years in total.\u003cbr/\u003eMost deaths are from alcohol-related diseases such as cancer, liver and heart diseases as well as poisoning from cheap, illegally produced alcohol. \u003cbr/\u003eDrinking plays also a major factor in fatal injuries through violent confrontations, traffic accidents, suicide and homicide.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor David Zaridze from the Russian Cancer Research Centre is a leading member of the Russian team of doctors which carried out the study.\u003cbr/\u003eZaridze is convinced alcohol is always strongly connected with poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"if we take our mortality statistics, it will be obvious that it's parallel to the social crisis, to our social instability\" \u003cbr/\u003eDeath rates dropped sharply in the mid 1980s when former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced an anti-alcoholism campaign. \u003cbr/\u003eThe highest overall rates occurred in 1994 following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and years of economic and political instability.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother sharp increase in the mortality rate was registered after Russia's financial crisis in 1998, which resulted in drastic inflation and mass job losses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe study controversially adds to the long-running debate among public health scientists as to the causes of an unprecedented plunge in mortality among Russians in the post-Soviet era.\u003cbr/\u003eSome argue that the crumbling of the Soviet health care system, increased smoking, changes in diet or a loss of jobs that raised stress levels were mainly responsible for the mysterious rise in deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lancet study pins the blame squarely on increased alcohol consumption, which roughly doubled between 1987 and 1994.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Zaridze says the root of it is the social and economic turmoil and hardship which led people to drown their sorrows in drink.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many drinkers themselves are not convinced there is a problem.\u003cbr/\u003eAlexei Kitayev, a driver from Saint Petersburg, says \"If the soul needs it - we drink, if the soul doesn't need it - we don't drink.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe says everyday drinking isn't a problem for him.\u003cbr/\u003eThough vodka remains the most widespread alcohol beverage in Russia, beer has become extremely popular. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has caused a new wave of alcohol dependency among the young, who like these teenagers, are often seen wandering in the streets with a beer bottle in hand. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter a while most of them, like 25 year old Maxim Vdovin, switch to hard liquor. \u003cbr/\u003eVdovin usually spends time drinking with friends at a children's playground in one of Saint Petersburg's remote districts.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing unemployed, he doesn't have money to buy alcohol so every morning he is begging money for a cheap bottle of vodka at the subway station nearby.\u003cbr/\u003eVdovin claims the Russian state is indifferent to the alcohol problems of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eSignificantly, he doesn't blame the drinking, but the poor standard of the liquor.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"so many people are dying because of the bad quality booze and they don't care.\"  \u003cbr/\u003ePoisoning from cheap illegal vodka has become a routine for him.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Zaridze says the loss of Russian life through alcohol in the 1990s is comparable with the loss of life during a war.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says during that period \"more than three million people died before their time\" before they reached their sixtieth birthday.\u003cbr/\u003eMany doctors fear it's impossible to combat this social disintegration without an effective anti-alcoholism policy, and only after the  Russian people stop drinking themselves to death will they stop the population decline.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe study in The Lancet is part of a series which claims the industrialised production and worldwide marketing of
