All you need is a smartphone and a SoundCloud application.\u003cbr/\u003ePress the record button and all the sounds you and your friends generate will be automatically uploaded to your SoundCloud account.\u003cbr/\u003eIan Hooper and Claudio Donzelli are members of the band \"The Mighty Oaks\".\u003cbr/\u003eHooper is originally from Washington State in the US, and Donzelli from Italy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut like many young artists and musicians they have set up in Berlin, attracted by the relatively low cost of living and Berlin''s reputation as a magnet for creative types.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past they would have played countless gigs to get their music out to the public, hoping to one day to secure a record contract with a company that would distribute their music on mass.\u003cbr/\u003eThese days it is much easier.\u003cbr/\u003eWith SoundCloud they record their song, either on their smartphone or with professional recording equipment, and upload the material to their SoundCloud account.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have nearly 15,000 followers around the world who can immediately  listen to the songs.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is also a dialogue between the fans, or followers as they are called on SoundCloud.\u003cbr/\u003eAnyone can write a comment, directly on the timeline of the song for everyone to see.\u003cbr/\u003eDo you like the bass line, or hate the vocals? It''s easy to let the band know.\u003cbr/\u003eThe songs can also be shared directly from SoundCloud on other platforms, like Facebook and Twitter and can be embedded on any  website.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hooper the wide distribution they get through SoundCloud would have been impossible just a few years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It has helped us really get our music out in to the interwebs, to get it to the ears and minds of the people that we never would have been able to reach before. I mean, if we look at our stats now we are missing just a few countries where our music has not been heard. It is very humbling but it also makes you realise what a powerful SoundCloud is as a tool for music creators,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing the website''s data tracking statistics, Hooper says one of his songs has been played as far away Greenland.\u003cbr/\u003e29-year-old Alexander Ljung, and his friend Eric Wahlforss founded SoundCloud in 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eLjung was born in the UK but grew up in Sweden and the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007 both Ljung and Wahlfors lived in Stockholm, working on a variety of projects and writing songs together.\u003cbr/\u003eThey realised they needed a platform to share the songs, not just with the public but also privately during the writing  process, they were disappointed there was no such platform available on the Internet.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We started just by looking at what creators needed and we realised no one else was really looking at this. And actually the real thing that started it was that we needed a specific tool ourselves to be able to send sounds to each other so we needed to build that and then we realised that there were a whole lot of other people that needed that as well,\" says Ljung.\u003cbr/\u003eThey worked from their homes in Stockholm until one day they visited Berlin on a holiday and decided it was the right city for SoundCloud. \u003cbr/\u003eStarting from humble beginnings in a cafďż˝ with their laptops, the company grew and now employs 60 people.\u003cbr/\u003eSoundCloud quickly became known in musician circles as a tool to share recordings among band members and eventually release full songs to the public.\u003cbr/\u003eBy August 2011 SoundCloud hit six million users, and funding from investors has quickly followed the hype.\u003cbr/\u003eIn July 2011, the same week as SoundCloud hit five million users, a  fund set up by Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher made an undisclosed investment in the company.\u003cbr/\u003eThe platform also started winning prizes. It was the audio and media category winner of the British newspaper, the Telegraph''s Start Up 100 awards in 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Ljung is not satisfied yet.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he is on a mission to make sound an integral part of the Internet, and make SoundCloud the go-to platform for it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we are really interested in seeing happening is making sound a  key part of the web, a natural part of the web in the same way as when  we go online and we see photos, we see text we see people expressing  themselves through all these different ways. We want sound to be as  common as everything else and we want to build the absolute largest \u003cbr/\u003e sound platform in the world,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile music was the original driving force behind SoundCloud other projects are starting to appear.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, a project collecting recordings of the UN declaration of Human rights in different languages.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother is the West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) project. WARD is based in Dakar, Senegal. They broadcast to the West Africa region via FM transmission and satellite.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd with the help of another Berlin based company, Sourcefabric - which develops free software for radio stations across the world - they have set up a SoundCloud account which lets them reach listeners across the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAirtime, the software developed by Sourcefabric, automatically uploads all WARD''s radio output, to SoundCloud.\u003cbr/\u003eIn July 2011 Sourcfabric won a Knight-Battern award for Innovations in Journalism for its project with WADR.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Adam Thomas, the communications manager for Sourcefabric, it was SoundCloud''s open platform that made them pick SoundCloud for  the project.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The SoundCloud platform is very easy for software developers to work with. Soundcloud is not, and has never been, one of his clients.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to him the key to SoundCloud''s success is the integration with other established social networks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don''t see SoundCloud as another social network. Instead SoundCloud uses other social networks to distribute music and  sounds people have on their mobile phones. So other social networks  are a just used as a distribution channel rather than being direct  competitors,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Ljung the future of SoundCloud is bright.\u003cbr/\u003eHe envisages an Internet no longer mute but filled with sound in all its forms.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The world hasn''t really seen yet all the things you can do with sound. But at this point the web is still largely mute, right?\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile most of SoundCloud''s users are musicians and bands without record contracts and on a shoestring budget, major artists are also starting to notice the company.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the last year a number of established artists like Kylie Minogue, The Smashing Pumpkins and Moby, have started distributing songs on SoundCloud.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the base of the company will most likely always be people like Hooper and Donzelli, uploading songs like this from their living
