Despite the brief interruption, the official ceremony went ahead, securing the former...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSpanish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAngry protests on Wednesday temporarily delayed the swearing in of Chile's first and only senator for life, General Augusto Pinochet. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the brief interruption, the official ceremony went ahead, securing the former dictator a smooth, self-authorised transfer into Congress following his retirement from military leadership a day earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the scars of his dictatorship have yet to heal with many in Congress threatening to charge him for crimes against humanity.\u003cbr/\u003eAngry crowds gathered in Chile's Pacific port of Valparaiso to protest against former dictator General Augusto Pinochet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city, 88 miles (140 kilometers) northwest of the capital Santiago, is home to Chile's upper house of Congress.  \u003cbr/\u003ePinochet was in town to be sworn in as senator for life.\u003cbr/\u003eMany say he has no place in the legislature.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the Senate, tension led to running street battles between protesters and riot police.\u003cbr/\u003eWater cannons were turned on crowds of several thousand.\u003cbr/\u003ePinochet's seat for life in the Senate was non-elected but lawful, according to a constitution passed by Pinochet himself.\u003cbr/\u003eEven so, angry congressmen and women inside the Senate protested at Pinochet's apparent impunity. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral attended bearing photographs of those who had died in the 1973 coup and later, during the 16-and-a-half-year dictatorship.\u003cbr/\u003eThe swearing in ceremony was delayed for 15-minutes until order was restored. \u003cbr/\u003ePinochet stood calmly aside and waited.\u003cbr/\u003eHe can expect a cool reception from fellow congressmen.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral lawmakers plan to start proceedings next week to impeach him for crimes allegedly committed by him during the dictatorship. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir prospects, though, are close to nil due to a majority in the Senate held by Chile's right-wing coalition.\u003cbr/\u003eThere still remains strong loyalty for Pinochet in Chile where many hail him as the saviour of their country.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir chants could be heard too in the rowdy street demonstrations that greeted Pinochet's new political chapter.\u003cbr/\u003eValparaiso, Chile - 11 March 1998\u003cbr/\u003e1.
