Packed Rose of Jericho, grown and packed by Hamm, on display at the Dormition Abbey\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rose of Jericho is a desert plant which appears dry and lifeless much of the time, but it comes into its own at Christmas time.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso known as the Resurrection plant it bursts into life if wet by rain or submerged in water.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rose of Jericho grows in the arid desert sands.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Christianity the so-called \"Resurrection Plant\" is said it symbolise the resurrection of Jesus Christ. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has an extraordinary ability to \"return to life\" after desiccation - the drying stems bend inwards and the plant closes up like a fist, almost as if guarding the seeds within. \u003cbr/\u003eThe plant remains tightly closed until the arrival of the next rain, when the branches open up again and release just the right amount of seeds to ensure the survival of its offspring. \u003cbr/\u003eIn folk medicine the plant was recognised as a remedy for infertile women, a cure for asthma and other diseases of the respiratory system and as a tonic for the digestive system.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the southern Israeli Kibbutz of Ein Gedi, Rose of Jericho grower Eilam Raz picks then soaks, cleans and dries the roses he picked from the fields. \u003cbr/\u003eSitting with his wife, Patricia on their porch, they carefully pack the roses into special boxes. \u003cbr/\u003eRaz said that he decided to try and domesticate the Rose of Jericho, which grows naturally in the area. \u003cbr/\u003eRaz explained that the plant required special packaging as it is delicate and needs to travel long distances, not only within Israel but also to Europe and America.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are dealing with a special plant and we thought about finding a special solution for packing this plant.
