Close up of Teng talking\u003cbr/\u003eA Chinese born New York City resident imprisoned for publicising details of China's crackdown on Falun Gong was released on Wednesday after serving almost three years.\u003cbr/\u003eTeng Chunyan had returned to China after the government banned Falun Gong in 1999, as a threat to public safety and communist rule. \u003cbr/\u003eShe was detained in May 2000 after informing foreign reporters in advance about protests and helping them to meet Falun Gong members.\u003cbr/\u003eTeng was later convicted of \"spying and leaking state secrets\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe press office of China's Cabinet arranged for foreign reporters to be on hand when Teng, 40, walked out of the \u003cbr/\u003ewomens' prison on the southern outskirts of Beijing.\u003cbr/\u003eTeng called Falun Gong a \"purely evil cult\", echoing the communist governments description of the group.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explained she was imprisoned because the information she had leaked to reporters was \"not objective\" and harmed China's international image and reputation.\u003cbr/\u003eTeng's comments have prompted Falun Gong activists abroad to suggest she might have been brainwashed or tortured.\u003cbr/\u003eTeng, an accupuncturist and practitioner of traditional chinese medicine is married to an American and has permanent US resident status. \u003cbr/\u003eTeng said she intended to stay in Beijing for a month after her release to buy medical books and study Taichi exercises before rejoining her husband.\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong attracted millions of members during the 1990s with its mix of slow motion exercises and an amalgam of Buddhist and Taoist philosophies with the ideas of its founders, a former Chinese clerk who now lives in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Falun Gong followers were detained after the 1999 ban and supporters abroad claim more than 600 members have been killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government
