its U-S subsidiary, to ask American authorities to investigate the safety of the Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle. \u003cbr/\u003eBridgestone President Shigeo Watanabe told reporters in Tokyo that the company has \"been saying it's strange there are that many accidents with the Explorer,\" and added that the request for a government investigation is in the interest of all U-S consumers.\u003cbr/\u003eFirestone said on Thursday it had asked the U-S federal government to investigate certain Explorer models, the popular sport utility vehicle at the centre of last year's massive recall of Firestone tyres.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report by Firestone claims the world's best-selling sport utility vehicle has a steering problem that contributed to rollovers Ford has blamed on faulty Firestone tires.\u003cbr/\u003eThe move, which followed Ford's announcement last week to replace 13 million Firestone Wilderness AT tyres on all its vehicles, could reignited the battle between former business partners Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. and Ford Motor Co. \u003cbr/\u003eLast month, Firestone severed its nearly 100-year-old relationship with Ford in a break described by some observers as the start of a \"nasty divorce\".\u003cbr/\u003eWatanabe acknowledged it was unusual for a tire company to be questioning the safety of a vehicle. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he reiterated
