The film traces the rapper's journey from a street poet to finding success.\u003cbr/\u003eHe'll also put out a revamped edition of the album with remixes and new material called \"Illmatic XX.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWhen asked if you could ever imagine the success and film based on it when writing the album, Nas joked for a second.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Maybe if it was a film I shot myself of like, like a little hood movie maybe (laughs) but yes and no. Yes and no because you know I already made videos. I was makin' videos for the album so back then I started thinking about movies but I could've never foreseen this right here,\" Nas said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Illmatic\" was Nas' debut album in 1994 and is one of the most  revolutionary albums in hip hop thanks to its strong narrative describing the artist's life on the streets of Queens. But Nas says after it's success, he's never  tried to duplicate it. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think a lot of people wanted me to chase this album. I never got that. You know I never did that. I always felt like it was important to grow. You've gotta grow. I never tried to chase it. I never will. That's a time period that's happened already and you can't fake that,\" Nas said.\u003cbr/\u003eActor Michael Rapaport walked the red carpet ahead of his directorial effort later in the week.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm so excited to be part of the Tribeca Film Festival. I think that obviously the Nas documentary couldn't be more New York, you know, his album is a classic album, it's a classic hip hop album and it's classic American music. It's beyond hip-hop, it's beyond rap music and I'm excited to see it. And tomorrow night you know we have 'When the Garden was Eden' the film that I directed about the '70-'73 Knicks and I'm really excited for people to see that. I'm really excited to be in New York showing and that was the goal to have it first be seen in New York,\" Rapaport said.\u003cbr/\u003eMichael K. Williams, of both 'The Wire,' and 'Boardwalk Empire' also came out to support Nas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean this documentary is more than just about an album. It's spanning, the lifespan of an epic career, born and bred in New York City from the hood of Queens Bridge Projects. He's seen a lot of things and gone a lot of places where he wasn't necessarily supposed to go, so you've got to celebrate that.
