Various of library\u003cbr/\u003ePortuguese students are working hard to earn their degrees, spending hours in dark libraries and studying until all hours to make the grade. \u003cbr/\u003eBut what comes after graduation may be their greatest challenge yet. \u003cbr/\u003eWith Portugal reeling from a crippling debt crisis which last month forced it to seek a bailout, the job market looks bleak and the students' best hope for a job may be abroad.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the situation is very difficult for all people,\" said 24-year-old Carlos Brigadeiro, who is completing a degree in Asian studies at the University of Lisbon. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The unemployment rate is going up each month and the youth, the young people, find it very hard to find a job,\" \u003cbr/\u003ePortugal has for decades lured poor immigrants from their former colonies. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, in an historic role reversal, the one-time empire builder is seeing legions of frustrated young people head to old dominions in quest of a better life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Portuguese are packing their bags for booming Angola and Mozambique in Africa, and for emerging economic powerhouse Brazil, where there is a shortage of engineers to prepare the country for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. \u003cbr/\u003eFigures from Portugal's Emigration Observatory show the number of Portuguese registered at consulates in Brazil, Angola and Mozambique has risen, and a researcher with Canada's Simon Fraser University estimated that between 1998 and 2008 some 700,000 Portuguese left their country in search of better opportunities.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile analysts say the true scale of the new migration is still hard to determine because official statistics lag behind trends, anecdotal evidence and fragmentary data point to what's going on.\u003cbr/\u003ePortugal's low-voltage economy is struggling to absorb the best-educated generation in its history.\u003cbr/\u003ePedro Martins, 19, who is majoring in Asian studies and learning Japanese and Mandarin, said he was considering moving to Japan once he graduates.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because of the recent earthquakes it's a country that's going to start rebuilding itself right now and they'll probably need a lot of help and a lot of translators as well.
