Wide shot, pan left of a BMW with Pirelli tyres during a test drive on a wet circuit\u003cbr/\u003eWhat if your car tyres could warn you about slippery roads and risky wear and tear? \u003cbr/\u003eWell Italian tyre-maker Pirelli, is hoping to introduce what it claims will be its safest and smartest wheel yet - the Cyber Tyre -  within the next five years.  \u003cbr/\u003eSealed off to the public, the Pirelli headquarters in Milan is home to 140 years of design, production and worldwide distribution.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe company invented the gripping \"low-profile tyre\" in the 1970s, and it's now pioneering intelligent tyres that promise to enhance safety for everyone.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Clearly, electronics in recent years have allowed a fast evolution of car safety and performance,\" says Pirelli Chief Technical Officer, Maurizio Boiocchi. \"Some years ago we came up with the idea of introducing electronics inside the tyre, so it could communicate with the electronic devices inside the car.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThat idea was called Cyber Tyre. By embedding a microchip inside the tyre, engineers have managed to create a system where real time information on the erosion, temperature, friction, and grip of the tyre, directly streams to the car's central operating system via secure radio channels.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Cyber Tyre can be described as the evolution of the species,\" says Head of the Cyber Tyre Programme,  Marco Sabatini.  \"Until today, the tyre has been the vehicle's muscle. Cyber Tyre adds the ability to analyse data and communicate.\" \u003cbr/\u003ePresent safety features like anti-lock breaking systems (ABS) and traction control-minimise skidding and help handle a vehicle in case of a crisis.  Cyber Tyre, instead, floods the car's central system with precautionary data to avoid such a crisis altogether.\u003cbr/\u003eOn a wet road, the Cyber Tyre system alerts to hydro-planing and drifting and in the case of wear and tear, recommends a tyre change.\u003cbr/\u003eTo do this, Cyber Tyre engineers were forced to reinvent the wheel.  The feat was to create electronic sensors that could withstand the tyre's high temperature, vibration and centrifugal force. Then, they had to figure out a way of computing data and transmitting it to a car that could understand it. \u003cbr/\u003ePirelli is already testing its first generation of Cyber Tyre on fleet trucks in Brazil. The electronic sensors allow engineers in Milan to track average speed, temperature, and road-generated stress on each tyre of each truck.\u003cbr/\u003eBy 2017, the second generation of Cyber Tyre will equip high-performance cars like BMW and Lamborghini. Boiocchi says, this is just the beginning.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Obviously, we'll start with advanced-technology vehicles, high-end vehicles, but the system is so useful that, over time, we will be able to implement it on less-expensive cars, which are sold in more significant numbers.\"  \u003cbr/\u003ePirelli invested about 170 million Euros in research and development this year, allocating 3
