Wide, pan House members \u003cbr/\u003eAnti-war protesters disrupted the start of a US House Armed Services committee hearing in Washington on Thursday, as the US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta prepared to testify on current levels of American defence spending.\u003cbr/\u003eCapitol Hill Police said eight people were arrested during the protests, seven were charged with disruption of Congress and one was charged with assault.\u003cbr/\u003ePanetta warned Congress that cutting any more than roughly 450 (b) billion US dollars already agreed to from defence spending over the next 10 years would devastate the military.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't say it as a scare tactic, don't say it as a threat,\" Panetta told the House Armed Services Committee. \"It's a reality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe and Army General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told lawmakers that deeper cuts would mean reductions in the force, making it difficult to keep troops in all critical areas around the globe.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite questions from the committee members, Panetta and Dempsey would not detail any planned spending cuts or give specifics on how US military strategy might be affected.\u003cbr/\u003eThey said they are still reviewing the issues.\u003cbr/\u003eRising deficits and deep debt have forced the US federal government to slash spending - even at the Pentagon, whose budget nearly doubled to some 700 (b) billion dollars in the 10 years since the September 11 attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe debt accord reached this past summer between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans calls for a 350 (b) billion dollar cut in projected defence spending over 10 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pentagon and House committee members say the actual number is more than 450 (b) billion. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Panetta and defence hawks in Congress fear much deeper cuts could come from the latest round of budget machinations.\u003cbr/\u003eHearing lawmakers frustration over pace of the drawdown of US troops from Afghanistan, Panetta said he and the President were committed to transition combat forces out by 2014.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, he cautioned, \"we just have to do this right.
