Tractor engine and truck pass by\u003cbr/\u003eAn annual fair held in the heart of rural England brings together steam engines from across the country to celebrate the grand age of steam.  \u003cbr/\u003e200 steam engines - all restored to full working order - provide a gleaming spectacle of sights, sounds and smells from a bygone age.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 250 thousand visitors flock to the Great Dorset Steam Fair each year. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are 200 working steam engines and 100 fairground organs at the show together with some 2000 other working exhibits.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fair  is spread over a 600 acre site at South Down, Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford Forum in Dorset. \u003cbr/\u003eAmongst the shiny brass and tractor rides one might be forgiven for forgetting that once these grand machines were the mainstay of industry, in particular farming.\u003cbr/\u003eEnthusiast Colin Wait restored his steam engine which was built around 1905 and was once used on a sheep shearing station in Australia. \u003cbr/\u003eNot all steam engines were able to move by their own accord.  Some were power units which were towed into position then used to drive ploughs or other machinery.   \u003cbr/\u003eColin believes the fascination of a steam engine lies with the open moving parts which can all be clearly seen in action.\u003cbr/\u003eFarming practices were revolutionised during the age of steam.  \u003cbr/\u003eSteam driven machines became widespread in various areas including threshing wheat, heavy haulage and saw cutting. \u003cbr/\u003eRobert Herring, Chairman of the National Traction Engine Trust explains how steam driven machines replaced men and horses enabling much more work to be done with less hardship on the people doing it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe countryside was being transformed by these new machines; by the work they were doing as well as the sight, sound and smells of the machines themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eNow two steam engines, one at the top and one at the bottom of a hill could plough a field in no time compared to the use of horses, which had to be rested, stabled, fed and watered.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitor Quin Collier is delighted to experience a snapshot of this bygone era, but says he is relieved not to have lived through it himself as he believes that despite all the benefits steam mechanisation brought it was still a tough period to be working the land.\u003cbr/\u003eThe steam era may be long gone but thanks to the fair, now in its
