Membership has rocketed as the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eTraders in a city in central Greece are rejecting the Euro before the Euro rejects them. \u003cbr/\u003eA network of traders in Volos has set up an alternative currency based on the bartering of goods and services. \u003cbr/\u003eMembership has rocketed as the country's crisis has deepened and talk intensified of the country being forced out of the Eurozone.\u003cbr/\u003eApostolos Arabatzis keeps bees on his 5 hectare farm outside Volos. \u003cbr/\u003eThe honey he gets from his hives helps him make ends meet.   \u003cbr/\u003eNothing remarkable in that, but it's the currency he gets for the honey that's making other Greeks take notice. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead of Euros he takes TEMs, a Greek abbreviation for Local Alternative Unit. \u003cbr/\u003eHis honey is given a value and he can trade it for the goods or services of other members of the network. \u003cbr/\u003eIn effect, it's a barter economy. Already he's used TEMs to pay for a doctor's visit.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the market in Volos residents come to spend their TEMs. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery Saturday a gaggle of producers trades items such as books, eggs, jam, clothes. And honey. It's a good day for Apostolos; his produce sells out by midday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe TEMs, which are coupon-based, are valued at one to one with the Euro. \u003cbr/\u003eOf course, they can only partially replace money - after all, you can't pay your tax or your utilities or most other things with them - but for members like Apostolos it's a way forward at this time of crisis.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It gives us a social relationship,\" he says \"and it detaches us from money as much as it's possible to do so.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 10 Greek cities have now started their own TEMs schemes but Volos is the model. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city from where the mythical Jason and the Argonauts set sail to find the Golden Fleece is now trying to lead the way on a different perilous journey.\u003cbr/\u003eThe office is a corner of a tailor's shop. From here they coordinate 900 members. The scheme started before the crisis as a fairer way to trade but its volunteers concede the meltdown has spurred membership with around 300 joining in the past few months. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Definitely it's bringing more people to the network but we hope that eventually people will see what's it's really about,\" says 28-year-old Euripides Siouras, an alternative therapist who helps with the administration. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They won't come to us because of need but because of the ideology.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut until then need is a very real spur. \u003cbr/\u003eHairdresser Dimitra Vasilou joined the scheme last September. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she was struggling to pay for the essentials of life, let alone any comforts. \u003cbr/\u003eNow through trading with others in the TEM network she can sometimes have both. She says she feels liberated.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Crisis?
