The...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMandarin/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eChina's leadership is assuring the Falun Gong religious group that it need not fear a government crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group has just staged the largest protest seen in Beijing since the Tiananmen Square student protest in 1989. \u003cbr/\u003eThe movement has more members in China than the communist party and the demonstration has apparently unnerved Chinese leaders, coming so close to the 10th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown .\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong followers were out in parks all over Beijing early on Tuesday morning.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were back to meditating just two days after Beijing's biggest protest since the Tiananmen Square massacre ten years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong followers don't look much like the students and workers who rocked China with their pro-democracy demonstrations ten years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for the group says they have no political aims - they simply want reassurance from the government that they can practice their \"qigong\" exercises in peace, free from government interference.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the government is wary of the group's appeal. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least 70 (m) million Chinese follow Falun Gong, according to an official Chinese government estimate, that's more than the 58 (m) million members of the Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003eLike the Christian Science faith practised in the United States, Falun Gong directs followers not to take any medicines.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have practised this for two years, and I have given up taking medicine. My whole body, from the body to the top, was sick. Since I started this, I haven't taken any medicine, and now I've recovered.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Falun Gong Practitioner\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong is by far the most popular of the many schools of qigong, a traditional Chinese practice using meditation and martial arts exercises.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's members are highly disciplined and organised.\u003cbr/\u003eThe leader of this group interrupted another member's interview, ordering her not to talk to foreign reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e(Female practitioner of Falun Gong): \"It has really great benefits for one's health - oh, I shouldn't talk? Okay\"\u003cbr/\u003e(Her fellow practitioner interrupts): \"All of you go. Next time you want to interview us, get our permission first, okay?\"\u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 1992 by Li Hongzhi, a martial arts master who now lives in New York, Falun Gong offers a blend of meditation, exercise and repackaged ideas from Buddhism and Taoism.\u003cbr/\u003eLi's teachings emphasise \"truth, compassion and forbearance\".\u003cbr/\u003eThey promise cosmic powers that will protect practitioners and offer the means to a higher stage of consciousness, or enlightenment.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, Falun practitioners have quietly limited their activities to group exercise and meditation in parks and at followers' homes.\u003cbr/\u003eSunday's gathering was in defiance of a government ban on mass gatherings that has prevented any large protests in Beijing since the military crackdown in June 1989 which  ended the Tiananmen demonstrations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sudden appearance of the protesters on the doorstop of the Beijing leadership's living and working compound of Zhongnanhai, was a powerful display of the group's discipline and organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eFalun followers converged on the compound after a critical magazine article on the group appeared in nearby Tianjin city.\u003cbr/\u003eThere have been reports that police had roughed up followers who went to Sunday's protest.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday the Chinese government commented officially about Falun Gong for the first time since the protest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Foreign Ministry seemed to suggest that Falun Gong's followers should have no fear of government
