Wide of boys practising kung fu\u003cbr/\u003eFor centuries, Shaolin monks in Henan province have been practising the ancient martial arts tradition of kung fu, but the next generation of young Shaolin warrior monks is embracing a new world of the internet and mass media. \u003cbr/\u003eThe monks have trademarked the Shaolin brand and even produced their own movies and reality shows. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Shaolin temple, which is known as the birthplace of kung fu and Zen Buddhism, has been undergoing a radical makeover.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite their ascetic appearance, Shaolin monks have been riding the crest of China's commercial revolution. Many monks are technologically literate, computer skilled, and some are even studying for Masters degrees (MBAs).\u003cbr/\u003eShaolin was also one of the first religious institutions to set up a website and has even commissioned a cartoon series and video games.\u003cbr/\u003eThe temple is now applying to be recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Abbot of the Shaolin Temple was also the executive producer of a 25 (m) million US dollar movie profiling Shaolin monks. He said that Shaolin has a long cultural heritage that can be protected, regardless of outside influences.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are difficulties, for example outside influences affect traditions and way of life but we think that Shaolin has survived for 1,000 years and so we can protect our unique culture and tradition,\" Shaolin Abbot, Shi Yongxin admits.\u003cbr/\u003eAlong with its search of enlightenment, Shaolin has marketed its name globally, and the monastery has also copyrighted the Shaolin name as a brand.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditionalists have criticised these recent moves for undermining the spiritual significance in the quest for global recognition, but many monks at the monastery feel that globalisation must be embraced.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If Shaolin is too traditional, it's not practical. We need to follow the trends so now we learn computers, learn English and interact with foreigners,\" said Shi Yanmo, a trainee monk.\u003cbr/\u003eShaolin's global recognition, and commercialism has become a huge tourist attraction.\u003cbr/\u003eOver two (m) million tourists and martial arts devotees visit the temple every year mostly to catch glimpses of the monks that have toured many concert halls across the world with their martial arts displays.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the town, dozens of private martial arts schools have sprung up offering courses in 'Shaolin boxing' and kung fu. Many have become lucrative business ventures, producing martial arts students by the thousands.\u003cbr/\u003eShaolin Warrior Monks Training Academy, which is affiliated to the Shaolin temple organises competitions where its 5,000 students pit their skills against each other. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the next decade, the school hopes to enrol three times the number of students and become the main disseminator of the Shaolin culture and martial arts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many of the students enrolled here don't come from wealthy families. Instead they and their parents hope that kung fu will offer them employment prospects as an instructor or even a kung fu expert in a touring martial arts troupe.\u003cbr/\u003eNine-year-old Li Lianjie's parents named him after the famous Chinese martial arts actor, Jet Li, well known by Western and Asian audiences for his kung fu skills.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd like the Hollywood star, little Li has grand ambitions for his future. \"I want to be a big kung fu star and be even better than Jet Li,\" Li said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe head of the academy, Shi Yanlu believes that the commercialisation of Shaolin kung fu schools must be monitored. While the numerous kung fu schools have helped spread Shaolin culture, their unbridled growth could bring problems.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are worried because what they teach may be different from the real Shaolin kung fu so if things go on like this, there may be misunderstandings on what is the true Shaolin kung fu,\" said Shi.\u003cbr/\u003eThis will be the dilemma the next generation of Shaolin monks faces as they try to embrace globalisation - how they can preserve their centuries old traditions yet stay relevant and modern.\u003cbr/\u003eBut perhaps, as in Zen Buddhism, there is no duality
