I knew Jim pretty well, that's what killed Elvis, that's what killed Jimi Hendrix, that's what killed Janis Joplin. Trying to be your character off stage, trying to live up to it. I have now successfully understood that Alice is a character that really doesn't want to live in this world.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. performance 'Sanctuary'\u003cbr/\u003eBefore Kiss' Gene Simmons spat blood and belched fire, or Ozzy Osbourne's bat-munching, or Iron Maiden's corpse-mascot Eddie graced the concert stage, Alice Cooper pioneered shock-rock theatrics - simulated executions, the chopping up of baby dolls, and Alice draping himself with a live boa constrictor - and explicit lyrics to become a controversial yet hugely popular figure in the early and mid-70s with massive hits such as 'Schools Out' (For Summer).'   \u003cbr/\u003eBut the only thing that is now bleeding in Cooper's repertoire is his liberal heart. His last album 'Brutal Planet' was an angry, indignant piece, Cooper's vision of possible future environment - and it wasn't pretty.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut it also wasn't enough, and the follow up, 'Dragontown', is the continuation of that vision, a vision that Cooper has just taken on a 30 date tour of America, despite the September 11th World Trade Centre attack.\u003cbr/\u003e'Dragontown' is, as Cooper has said in the press, \"about life's pure failures and the descent they find themselves in\".\u003cbr/\u003eFor Cooper, that includes Doors frontman Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley and John Lennon. \u003cbr/\u003eCooper may be placing Rock's brightest talents in his own unique Hell, but he claims he's not out to shock anymore.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says, \"Shock I think was dead a while back. I think when CNN got more shocking than me, that's when I quit trying to shock the audience. I really don't do shock rock now. I haven't done it since probably the 80s. Now it's pure entertainment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e'Dragontown' is where those not qualified for Rock and Roll Heaven go to. And they are joined by ordinary \"failures\" such as the two kids who massacred their classmates at Columbine and Sister Sara, a nun who \"took the vows and blew it\".\u003cbr/\u003eCooper's netherworld is personal, but he thinks everyone will be able to relate to it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everybody has nightmares. I have now successfully understood that Alice is a character that really doesn't want to live in this world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDespite what he says, he still has quite a lot invested in shocking people - he's just opened a haunted house in Phoenix for Halloween, complete with a chainsaw-wielding maniac who chases screaming customers onto the street.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd on the ````wall of shame'' there is a cellphone, beeper, glasses and some jewellery dangling on rusty hooks. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the actors portraying the haunted house's freaks and ghouls, it's evidence of a good night's scare: personal items left behind by customers too frightened to stop. \u003cbr/\u003e\"People pay us their money and then thank us for scaring them,'' haunted house director Steve Kopelman said. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 1,000 people show up nightly for the show, which runs through Saturday. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $13.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe production cost $250,000 and took 15 months to finish, said director Ted Kelley. High-tech robots, sound and lighting fill the house, but Kelley said its success stems mostly from the 30 actors and crew. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's like an eight-hour aerobics class for the actors,'' said Kelley. \"Granted, it's a 30-second show that they'll do hundreds of times a night, but it's in their blood.
