Mid shot of Levy in the garden at Columbia University\u003cbr/\u003eClimate experts on Thursday expressed mixed reactions to the deal reached by world leaders at the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Heiligendamm in Germany, to halve the world's emissions by 2050.\u003cbr/\u003eG8 leaders, including US President George W. Bush, agreed to call for \"substantial global emissions reductions\" to fight global warming, citing a goal of a 50 percent cut by the middle of the century.\u003cbr/\u003eEuropean leaders hailed the agreement as progress in the wrangling between Europe and the United States over global warming, with the Europeans pushing mandatory cuts and the US resisting.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut some campaigners were critical of the agreement, calling it a failure and saying it stopped short of concrete commitments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The leaders of the G8 countries have failed to set clear targets and to commit themselves to take leadership as they have caused most of the climate change we face today,\" said Daniel Mittler, climate policy expert and chair of Greenpeace International.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In reality those cuts, our science tells us are necessary if we are going to avoid dangerous climate change and avoid putting billions at risk for example of water scarcity,\" Mittler said. \u003cbr/\u003eMika Obayashi, director of Japanese Institute for sustainable energy policies, had a more positive reaction although she said she was surprised that her government had accepted the agreement. \u003cbr/\u003eObayashi's institute has conducted numerous studies and interviewed government officials in the past who claimed the agreement was a European fantasy. \u003cbr/\u003eWith the agreement now reached Japan \"has a special obligation for other Asian countries to take a leadership to show them that we are doing our efforts to combat this global warming,\" Ohbayashi said.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts in the US said the agreement was a small step in the right direction, but not a guarantee.\u003cbr/\u003eMarc Levy, deputy director of the Centre for International Earth Science Information Network at the Earth Institute at Columbia University said that the G8's promises were too general. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a big step that Bush is saying he's willing to engage in multilateral diplomacy.
