These people are then forced to migrate to the nearest city and if they don't find work, they migrate to the big cities. This phenomenon is steadily increasing. Various of flooded landscape\u003cbr/\u003eFor millions of people living along Bangladesh's coastline, the South Asian monsoon has arrived on the heels of a devastating cyclone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe extreme weather is forcing some of the poorest people from coastal communities to migrate to the cities, as others brace themselves for pouring rains and flooding rivers.\u003cbr/\u003eJust two months after cyclone Aila ripped through Bangladesh's Satkhira district, killing hundreds and driving hundreds of thousands of families in search of dry land, there is no respite for coastal communities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe South Asian monsoon has arrived, bringing with it heavy rains that are flooding large swathes of the coastline and forcing families to spend the few savings they have preparing for another season of floods, or migrating to the cities. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Southern Bangladesh, in the villages of Chakla, Ashashoni and Dighlarait, families who have rebuilt their houses since cyclone Aila are now raising the levels of their houses hoping they will stay above the floodwaters. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We lost our house and belongings to cyclone Aila, and though it has been a few months since, the water keeps rising,\" says Rafiqul Islam Sana, a resident of Dighlarait.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't have any other shelter so we rebuilt the house after raising the floor with an earthfill. It is much higher than it used to be but I am scared it will not be enough because the monsoon rains won't stop,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eSana and his family have raised the level of their house, and have used bricks to raise the level of their bed, but are still scared that when the waters rise after a few days of heavy rains, their house will be washed away as it was nearly three months ago, when cyclone Aila hit.\u003cbr/\u003eTahmina Begum is a resident of Patakhali. Where her house used to be, there is now a new tributary of the river. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I will never be able to reclaim that land, so I had to squat on the street without water, without proper toilets, without a house. Everyday it rains from above and the tidal waters rise from below. I have decided to leave for the city,\" says Tahmina.\u003cbr/\u003eMozaharul Alam heads the Asia Pacific climate change project for the United Nations Environment Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that extreme weather causes poverty and migration. \u003cbr/\u003eAlam says there needs to be an international process and understanding in place to rehabilitate climate migrants internally, and if needed, internationally. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past one-and-a-half years three major cyclones have ripped through this part of coastal Bangladesh leaving this community in tatters.\u003cbr/\u003eIn November 2007, super cyclone Sidr hit the area killing more than 4,000 people and destroying hundreds of thousands of houses.\u003cbr/\u003eIn April 2009 cyclone Bijli hit Bangladesh and India, followed in quick succession by cyclone Aila in May. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the IPCC (the intergovernmental panel on climate change), Bangladesh is on the front line of global climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eTens of millions of people face rising sea levels, falling crop yields, frequent devastating cyclones and a rising intensity of its annual floods. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN Environment Programme says that between 10 and 25 million people are migrating to big cities in Bangladesh every year as a result of extreme weather events linked to global climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of these families are able to return to their villages when flood waters subside, but many join the swelling ranks of floating slum communities in big cities. \u003cbr/\u003eAsia is perhaps the most vulnerable region to climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to water shortages, crop yields in Central and South Asia could drop by 30 percent by 2050, and coastal cities including Bangkok, Jakarta, Karachi, Manila, Mumbai and Shanghai will be vulnerable to flooding or damage from unpredictable weather patterns.\u003cbr/\u003eClimate scientists have urged rich countries to reduce emissions by between 25 percent and 40 percent by 2020 to avoid the worst effects of warming.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say warming weather will lead to widespread droughts, floods, higher sea levels and worsening storms.\u003cbr/\u003eEven a 3.6-degree Fahrenheit (2-degree Celsius) temperature rise could subject up to 2 billion people to water shortages by 2050 and threaten extinction for 20 percent to 30 percent of the world's species, according to a 2007 report by the intergovernmental panel, a U.N. network of 2,000 scientists.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
