The legend says that it was a gift to the monastery of La Fille-Dieu from the sister of one of the kings of France. That's how they started to assemble smaller pieces together. They realised that in doing so they could make some beautiful things using different shades of colours. As the technique was expensive it was mainly reserved to religious architecture. Later during the Art Noveau period the technique was also applied to civil architecture. Tilt up from medieval tomb to vitral (stained glass window)
22. Close up of medieval vitral
Medieval stained-glass windows or 'vitreaux' were introduced to the village of Romont in the Swiss French-speaking canton of Fribourg in the fourteenth century.
Since then Romont considers itself the world capital of stained glass art.
Since it was founded in 1240 Romont has been a local stronghold for art and culture.
Surrounded by lakes and mountains, the picturesque village is located on the main roads and railway lines connecting Lausanne and Fribourg where the French speaking Swiss give way to their German speaking neighbours to the east.
Stefan Trumpler is a local historian as well as the director of Romont's local vitreaux museum.
He explains that according to the legend it was back in the 12th century when the sister of a French king gave a 'vitrail' (French for stained-glass window) as a donation to a local monastery.
Since then Romont has become a place where artists manufacture vitreaux (plural of 'vitrail') designs both for the local region and around Europe.
The local cathedral - Collgiale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption - is a gothic style church that houses samples of vitreaux dating back to the beginning of the 14th century.
Some of the original vitreaux from this church were taken to the local museum and the window frames have been replaced with a variety of glass styles from the 16th century up until the modern day.
City walls and watch towers still provide a Medieval feel to this town where an ancient castle looks over the Swiss Stained Glass Museum or 'Vitromusee'.
The museum houses a collection of stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages to the present day.
In an adjacent workshop students and visitors can watch how stained-glass artists design and make a vitrail.
Pascale Moret is a local stained-glass artist and works both as a conservationist and as a designer of modern vitreaux.
The pieces of coloured glass are assembled on top of a table and inserted by means of aluminium frames that are later welded with tin or lead.
Moret explains that in Medieval times the techniques weren't advanced enough to make a single large glass pane so small fragments of glass had to be assembled in order to cover a whole window.
It was at this point that artists realised that in mixing different colours of glass the result was a colourful display of glass that could also be transformed into an image or a picture.
Back then only the Church was wealthy enough to afford such works so vitreaux became associated with religion.
Moret explains that it wasn't until the 19th century when the art of stain glass became associated with civil and military architecture.
Beyond the city walls lies the Cistercian Abbey or 'Fille-Dieu'.
The original old stained-glass windows were sold at auction to pay for the maintenance of the building.
In an attempt to establish Romont as an area known for both old and modern vitreaux the local authorities - with the agreement of some of the nuns - decided to replace the windows with modern style stained-glass displays.
In 1996 they commissioned British artist Brian Clarke to cover the windows with a series of minimalistic non-figurative stained-glass windows that have been welcomed by only some of the nuns.
Hortence Verthet is the mother superior of the Abbey
She says she doesn't find the new vitreaux at odds with the Medieval environment of the church.
She says they help her to find inspiration during her daily prayers and meditations.
Tourists and visitors to Romont can follow the "stained-glass trail" that includes several chapels and churches that house both old and contemporary stained-glass windows.
This is the church of St.Maurice which lies five kilometres (3.1 miles) from Romont.
It houses stained-glass windows designed by Italian Painter Anselmo Francesconi in 1984 on the theme of the Passion of Jesus.
Fabienne Porchet is a tourist following the stained-glass trail.
Porchet says she's going from church to church discovering different styles of vitreaux.

<div
