Visitors watch the fireworks\u003cbr/\u003eSince its founding in 1945 the resort of Courchevel's mix of traditional alpine architecture and access to the huge  'three valleys' ski region has made it one of the most popular ski resorts in France. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 'three valleys' region played host to the Winter Olympics in 1992 and boasts that it is the world's largest ski area with more than 600 kilometres (372 miles) of snow runs. \u003cbr/\u003eCourchevel alone has more than 100 ski runs.\u003cbr/\u003eNo wonder the resort's reputation has spread beyond France, attracting wealthy international tourists whose ready cash has transformed the town into one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tourist office says that most of visitors come from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Russia. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a picture postcard scene, clear blue sky, crisp white freshly fallen snow and traditional alpine chalets. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter a slow start due to lack of snow in January, the winter holiday season is in now full swing in the French Alps. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tourists are once again filling the slopes bringing with them a much needed injection of income into the region. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 'three valleys' region played host to the Winter Olympics in 1992 and boasts that it is the world's largest ski area with more than 600 kilometres (372 miles) of snow runs. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo of the region's main resorts Meribel and nearby Courchevel have gained a reputation as playgrounds of the rich and famous. \u003cbr/\u003eCourchevel in particular attracts a jet set clientele of wealthy patrons, particularly Britons and Russians.  \u003cbr/\u003eCourchevel's villages are split over five different altitudes, the traditional villages of St Bon and Le Praz, Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650 and Courchevel 1850. \u003cbr/\u003eThe highest village Courchevel 1850 boasts the most prestigious shops, hotels and restaurants , including two Michelin starred restaurants. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's also one of the few alpine resorts with a private air strip.\u003cbr/\u003eDenis Zanon, the director of Courchevel Tourism say that the resort offers an unique environment, combining luxury and prestige with access to the three valley ski areas. \u003cbr/\u003eHotel Annapurna, one of the poshest hotels in the region is tucked away in Courchevel 1850. \u003cbr/\u003eHolidaymakers can ski in and out straight from the hotel, be served food in their own dining room or lounge in private saunas. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever luxury comes with a hefty price tag. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cheapest room in high season comes in at more than 650 Euros ($853 US Dollars), it's most expensive, a 150m2 suite costs more than 4000 Euros. ($5,250 US Dollars). \u003cbr/\u003eSome of his most loyal customers are wealthy Russians, eager to spend money in the town. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Annapurna's owner, Claude Pinturault says that does not necessarily mean big spending at his hotel, as the guests prefer to eat out in the town's restaurants, party in nightclubs and spend in designer shops like Hermes. \u003cbr/\u003eLe Lana was the first hotel to be built in Courchevel in 1958 and is now another one of the resort's most elite establishments, with all the luxuries that entails including fine dining, a pool and spa.\u003cbr/\u003eLe Lana is run by Franck Brionne. He says that they have to keep up with demands from an every more discerning clientele. \u003cbr/\u003eFurther down the mountain is the traditional village of St. Bon, Courchevel. \u003cbr/\u003eSt. Bon is home to the Sullice family, who are the last dairy farmers to keep cows on the mountains during the winter season. \u003cbr/\u003eThe traditional of dairy farming is slowly dying out.\u003cbr/\u003eRobert Sullice and his son Jean-Marc produce the regions typical cheeses, Tome de Savoie and Beaufort. \u003cbr/\u003eJean-Marc has helped his father keep the business running but doesn't know how much longer their way of life will continue. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he has been working with his father for some 20 years \"How long will this life go on? I don't know,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eRobert is 79 and still works as a ski instructor during the winter season as he has done since the early days of the resort in 1949. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter a day on the slopes, he returns to work with the cows at the fromagerie (cheese factory). \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he thinks the younger generations won't want to continue with this very traditional way of Courchevel mountain life.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in Courchevel 1850 after a days skiing, visitors often tend to visit the shops for a spot of retail therapy in some of the town's designer shops and art galleries. \u003cbr/\u003eCourchevel is well aware that it needs to work hard to keep its position in the ski marketplace and regularly spends tens of thousands of dollars on elaborate fireworks displays.\u003cbr/\u003eGlobal warming poses a serious threat to Alpine ski resorts and the regional economies that depend on them according to a recent report by the OECD.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, which carried out a study of ski areas across the Alps, says the mountain chain was \"particularly sensitive\" to climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report indicates that global warming in the Alps is three times the global average and the climate model projections show even greater changes in the coming decades. \u003cbr/\u003eBut right now the resort is full of skiers and snowboarders and the tills are full of tourist money and that can only be something for the region to celebrate.
