Various of news conference\u003cbr/\u003eFrench doctors announced on Tuesday that they had performed a partial face transplant on a man whose face was disfigured by a genetic disorder, giving him a new nose, mouth and chin and replacing part of his cheeks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 16-hour operation which started on Saturday, according to a hospital spokesman, was the world's third partial face transplant.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 29-year-old patient suffered from a genetic condition known as neurofibromatosis, which causes tumours to grow on nerve tissue throughout the body, the doctors said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The lower part of the face was completely destroyed by this benign tumour and we had to remove everything,\" said Dr. Laurent Lantieri, the surgeon who lead the operation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The first goal was to see if the transplant was okay and it looks today marvellous. But we have to wait,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe condition is similar to the disorder that affected Joseph Merrick, the man who was depicted as \"The Elephant Man\" in the theatre and on screen. \u003cbr/\u003eThe patient had undergone about 30 or 40 surgeries over 10 years to try to improve the appearance of his face, Lantieri said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"He could barely speak, he had large difficulty to speak. When he was eating, he was drooping and he had to push his lips upward and it was very difficult for him. But the main thing (was) that he couldn't have a normal social relation with anybody,\" the surgeon said.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors said one of the patient's main sources of suffering was the fact that he could not get a job because of his appearance.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the lifelong risks that a transplant surgery poses, episodes of rejection or even death Lantieri told reporters he believed the patient was \"happy\" he had had the surgery.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He was brilliant, he was intelligent, he could perfectly assume this kind of surgery and that's why he went to it and he knew the risks and the benefits, and he knew he could die of it and he went through it,\" Lantieri said.      \u003cbr/\u003eThe patient remained sedated on Tuesday, and still had not seen a picture of himself. \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctor did not release any information about the patient or the donor, seeking to protect their privacy.\u003cbr/\u003eLantieri carried out the operation at Henri-Mondor hospital in the Paris suburb of Creteil.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, Frenchwoman Isabelle Dinoire received the world's first partial face transplant after her dog mauled her. \u003cbr/\u003eSince that surgery, a Chinese farmer also received a partial face transplant after he was badly disfigured in a bear attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest procedure is different because the patient was disfigured by a genetic condition, not an accident.\u003cbr/\u003eLantieri was a critic of the French team that carried out the first partial face transplant. \u003cbr/\u003eLantieri, an adviser to the French medical ethics panel, said Dinoire's surgeons violated the panel's advice because they failed to try reconstructive surgery first.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the anniversary of Dinoire's procedure in November, doctors said her operation was a success and that she was gaining more sensitivity and facial mobility.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors in Britain and the United States are also working toward similar procedures.\u003cbr/\u003eIn October, an ethics panel approved plans by surgeons at the Royal Free Hospital in London to carry out what could be the world's first full-face transplant, though it said
