Tight shot rice seeds \u003cbr/\u003eStudents from Thailand and the Philippines are being sent to 'Rice Camp' to learn first hand about rice production.\u003cbr/\u003eRice Camp, a project of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), is an annual training course that targets high school students in Thailand and the Philippines. The aim is to get the young students interested in rice production early so that they are not swayed into other careers as they proceed to college.\u003cbr/\u003eRice is the staple food of Asia, with an estimated 3 billion of its population eating it on a daily basis. \u003cbr/\u003eThailand and the Philippines are two of the biggest rice-consuming and rice-producing countries in Asia. Between them, they produce 35 million tons of rice per year.  But experts fear interest in rice production is dwindling.\u003cbr/\u003eNow both countries are collaborating on a project that seeks to ensure the continuity and sustainability of rice production in their respective countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students here come from farming families,  but this is no assurance that they will continue their parent's vocation when they finish schooling. Many existing rice farmers, having experienced the hard life of a farmer, are dissuading their children from farming and encouraging them to seek other careers.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Noel Magor, the head of IRRI's training centre, says one of the challenges with rice production and rice research in the future is attracting young people into production, farming practice and research. \u003cbr/\u003eThe approach is two-pronged.  The organisers hope that renewed interest generated from the training will translate into a career in rice farming. It is further hoped that some of them will take up rice research and become the rice scientists of the future.\u003cbr/\u003eCourse Facilitator,  Gina Zarsadias, says students will experience the entire rice production process from land preparation, to planting, harvesting, to post-harvest.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe organisers claim that with current increases in population the current high-yielding varieties of rice produced by the institute will not be able to meet the demand in fifty years unless a dramatic change in yield is achieved.\u003cbr/\u003eJakkrapong Homsaeng is a sixteen year old student from Thailand. His parents are both rice farmers.  He says it's up to the younger generations to ensure that rice production continues. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Magor hopes this kind of enthusiasm will rub off on Homsaeng's peers back in Thailand.\u003cbr/\u003eFor now, the ten students from Thailand and their equal number of Filipino counterparts are busy trying their hands at different aspects of farming and discovering the science behind the crop. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce they return home they will tour schools in their respective regions to raise awareness among other students on the prospects and future of rice production.
