And although they have been ordered to turn them over they have refused to do so. And what it does is it paints a clear picture of how severe the abuse and the torture that was happening at Abu Ghraib was, and it also leads us to question what kinds of severe torture and abuse were happening at Abu Ghraib and other prisons when cameras weren't present.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe American Civil Liberties Union and Amnesty International has given their reactions to an Australian television network's airing of photographs and video clips it said were previously unpublished images of the abuse of Iraqis held in US military custody at Abu Ghraib prison.\u003cbr/\u003eThe images broadcast on Wednesday were taken at Abu Ghraib in late 2003 at about the same time as previously published photographs of Iraqi prisoner abuse, the Special Broadcasting Service's \"Dateline\" program reported.\u003cbr/\u003eThe images shown were consistent with the earlier photographs, which triggered outrage at alleged abuse by US soldiers, a congressional investigation and military trials for some of those involved.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one in the images broadcast on Wednesday could clearly be identified as US military personnel, but men wearing combat-style uniforms and holding dogs on leashes appear in at least one of the images.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of them were more graphic than the images published earlier, showing apparently dead bodies, injuries and sexual acts.\u003cbr/\u003eSBS said the images were among photographs the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was trying to obtain from the US government under a Freedom of Information request.\u003cbr/\u003eA US district court in September upheld the request in a ruling covering scores of photographs and several videotapes. US Government lawyers said it was considering an appeal, and the images were not immediately released.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an e-mailed message, SBS said ACLU had not seen the images sought under the Freedom of Information request, so it had not been able to confirm whether they were the same as those broadcast on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the general description of the photographs the ACLU is seeking \"is consistent with the photographs we are releasing,\" the SBS statement said.\u003cbr/\u003eSBS refused to give details of the source of the photographs, and it was impossible to independently confirm their authenticity.\u003cbr/\u003eACLU Spokeswoman Amrit Singh said the American public deserved to know exactly what happened at the Iraqi prison as well as those run by the US in other countries. \u003cbr/\u003eAmnesty International spokeswoman Jumana Musa, speaking in Washington, said the still pictures and video showed the severe nature of the abuse.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It also leads us to question what kinds of severe torture and abuse were happening at Abu Ghraib and other prisons when cameras were not present,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a Senate Armed Services Committee inquiry in May 2004, US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld testified that not all known photographs of the abuses at Abu Ghraib had been publicly released.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US State Department legal advisor John Bellinger said on Wednesday that the decision had been made not to release further photographs from the prison in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eNot, he said, because \"there was anything to hide\" but because it was deemed to be an invasion of privacy as well as potentially causing violence once they were released.\u003cbr/\u003eBellinger said that while the images show the reprehensible conduct that was occurring inside the prison it was \"unfortunate\" that they have come out and could potentially \"fan the flames\" of violence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This was an extremely unfortunate event but we have held people accountable fully,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier a Pentagon spokesperson said that more than 25 people had been held accountable for criminal acts
