Wide exterior of court\u003cbr/\u003eDisgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk firmly believed that his lab's purported stem cell breakthroughs were genuine until confronted last year with evidence they were faked, his lawyer insisted on Tuesday at the start of Hwang's fraud trial in Seoul.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang, once hailed as a national hero, went on trial on charges of fraud and embezzlement in a scandal over now-discredited claims of progress in the cloning of stem cells that had raised false hopes of dramatic new treatments for incurable diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opening comments by Hwang's lawyer appeared to reflect Hwang's long-running strategy of blaming the scandal on underlings in his research team.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang was indicted last month for allegedly accepting two (b) billion won (2.1 million US dollars) in private donations based on the outcome of the falsified research and embezzling about 800 (m) million won (831-thousand US dollars) in private and government research funds.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang also was accused of buying human eggs for research, a violation of the country's bioethics law.\u003cbr/\u003eIf convicted, the 52-year-old scientist faces at least three years in prison. Hwang is being tried along with five colleagues who face similar charges.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang, who hasn't be seen in public since March, declined comment to journalists before the hearing, appearing nervous and tight-lipped.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the trial's start at Seoul Central District Court, Hwang's supporters gathered outside. The supporters, who have staged energetic demonstrations backing the trained veterinarian despite the revelations of research fraud, formed much of the courtroom audience.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang was fired in March as a professor at Seoul National University's veterinary department.\u003cbr/\u003eThe claims in his landmark papers started unravelling with media reports late last year about ethics violations that snowballed into his eventual admission that the evidence supporting his research was fabricated.\u003cbr/\u003eThe claims of advances in embryonic stem cells, the basic human cells that can develop into nearly any kind of tissue, had offered hope of new treatments for millions of patients suffering from debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.\u003cbr/\u003eCreating patient-specific stem cells with a patient's own DNA would be a key breakthrough because they theoretically could be used for treatments to replace sick cells that
