A slogan says, \"What about me? Protect My Life!\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt comes two weeks after the Socialist government revealed plans to reform the 1985 abortion law, including allowing the practice on demand up to 14 weeks into pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government plans to approve the reform by the end of the year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe reform also includes allowing abortion up to 22 weeks into pregnancy if a doctor certifies a serious threat to the health of the mother or foetal malformation.\u003cbr/\u003eBeyond 22 weeks, it would be allowed only when doctors detect foetal malformation they deem incompatible with life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current law allows abortion up to 12 weeks in cases of rape and 22 weeks in cases of foetal malformation. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also allows abortion at any stage if a doctor certifies a woman's physical or mental health would be at risk if the pregnancy proceeded.\u003cbr/\u003eCoinciding with the church protest, hundreds of scientists and researchers issued a statement on Tuesday rejecting the government's plans and supporting the right to life.\u003cbr/\u003eCesar Nombela, professor of Microbiology and member of the Spanish Bioethics Committee, is one of the scientists behind the statement.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in Madrid on Friday, he cited a lowering demographic as a reason against eased abortion laws. He is concerned there could be an \"accelerated decrease in the population\".\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2004, the Socialists have frequently angered the Church and conservatives by enacting social reforms such as gay marriage and fast-track divorce.\u003cbr/\u003eA parliamentary spokesman for the party responded to the church protest earlier in the week, labelling the church campaign as \"extremist and demagogic.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe health minister said that it was not a question of \"yes or no to abortion\" but rather adapting to be aligned with Spain's European neighbours.\u003cbr/\u003eSpain is predominantly Roman Catholic but in recent years the church has lost much of its influence.\u003cbr/\u003ePaloma Alfonso, vice president of the group 'Catholic women for the right to decide' said that men within the Catholic church often do not have a great enough understanding of issues affecting women.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What really makes me angry about this campaign is to see the baby with the lynx, because the Church is actually not interested in the baby,\" she told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are interested in the embryo, very interested.
