That is because all four artists work with installations, they work with the space," he says.
In a perfect reflection of the international nature of the German capital's burgeoning art scene, three of the artists were born outside of Germany.
Auckland-born artist Simon Denny (born 1982) has lived in Berlin for the last two years.
His work focuses on popular culture such as television shows, shop windows and computer games.
The installation he is showing as a part of the prize exhibition analyses the language and aesthetics of the Digital Life Design conference in Munich in 2012.
The conference drew academics, politicians and business people from around the world to discuss the possibilities and pitfalls of the Internet.
Denny was there to document each moment, every speech and every debate.
The result was a large installation compromised of posters showing every minute of the conference, from the registration to the keynote speeches by such internet heavyweights as Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook and Arianna Huffington, the founder of the Huffington Post.
His approach is mostly journalistic, using the posters to show quotes from the speeches.
"I think it is a really good frame to look at a group of people who are in charge of designing the ways and infrastructure in which we are able to communicate. And, an exhibition is a good time to take a look at this and see what they have thought, what they have said, what they look like," he says.
The only German born artist competing for the prize is Kerstin Bratsch (born 1979), a Hamburg native, now living in Berlin and New York.
Her works mostly consist of large abstract oil paintings that dominate the huge walls of the Hamburger Bahnhof.
She worked on her "Psychic Series" sets of paintings from 2004 to 2008 and they form the core of he contribution to the exhibition.
The paintings overlook smaller works made out of glass standing on the floor of the room.
In one corner is a strong lamp, which turns on and off on a regular basis.
"The theme I work with in my paintings and in my other work is light.
