It is important to see them and to perceive all that the Virgin Mary is not just a devotion but also an historical fact that we can see and touch.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTourism officials say the Jewish state has, for a long time, facilitated pilgrimages for Christians to travel in the footsteps of Jesus, aggressively promoting the myriad holy sites that visitors can experience, uniquely in Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new endeavour hopes to encourage return visits by those who have already made their first pilgrimage. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso important on the itinerary is the Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem.\u003cbr/\u003eBeneath a massive mosaic of Mary riding a donkey, tour guide Pnina Ein Mor told visitors they were standing at the site where the pregnant Mary is said to have visited her cousin, Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors are then led into the crypt of the church, where where painted scenes of Mary and other biblical figures fill every wall.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2010, 69 percent of Israel's almost 3.5 million tourists were Christians, mostly Catholics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tourism ministry market-tested the concept with European and American Catholics and got encouraging responses, said Lina Haddad, who directs Israel's marketing of religious tourism. \u003cbr/\u003eHaddad says the initiative will go a long way to help Catholics as they seek to follow in Mary's footsteps in the Holy Land.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is where she was born, when she had the Annunciation.
