Mid shot of pedestrians.\u003cbr/\u003eCentral Kenya is vital to the entire nation's prosperity because it is a main source of water and electricity from rainfall and glacier melt from Mount Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rains have failed this year again, and the air is thick with the stench of rotting cattle carcasses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe runoff from the glacier has slowed to a brown trickle.\u003cbr/\u003eDrought and the devastating effects of climate change are nothing new in Kenya, but this year the hardships are spreading even to Nairobi and affecting the country's burgeoning middle class and business community. \u003cbr/\u003eAs always Kenya's poorest are suffering most. \u003cbr/\u003ePeruan Lesakut, a Maasai herdsman has just 56 cows now, all of them emaciated. \u003cbr/\u003eIn July he had a herd of 120 animals, but since then more than half have died, leading to a massive financial shortfall when he tries to sell them at market. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I wish to get help to medicate my sick cattle and vaccinate the remaining cattle. I am stuck now because I cannot get rid of them, I watch them drop dead and I continue with the rest of the herd waiting for them to drop dead too.\" explains Lesakut.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Laikipia, some 125 miles (200 kilometres) from Nairobi, the harvests of maize, beans and potatoes have failed for the past three years. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmers and their families have had to rely on handouts from the U.N.'s World Food Programme, with their main meals consisting of maize meal and salt. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The drought has become unbearable, there is no food, we have no water, and it is like we have no tomorrow. We just sit and wait to get food, not get food or die, we just wait to see.\" says Simon Ngatia, a farmer who has had three consecutive failed harvests and has lost any hopes of growing crops in his farm ever again.\u003cbr/\u003eStreams where the villagers fetched drinking water have dried up and farmers spend their days trying to dig up failed crops.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WFP is already providing emergency food aid to some 2.5 million people in Kenya, but another 1.3 million still need help. \u003cbr/\u003eGabrielle Menezes, Spokeswoman for WFP says \" Some places in Kenya are looking at four consecutive failed harvests and these people are used to growing food for themselves and their families so they are really struggling to buy it on the market place. Places have been overgrazed and even shallow water pans and places where there should be water have dried up.\" \u003cbr/\u003eDried-up dams have led to power rationing around the country, forcing Kenyans either live without power at least three days a week or buy expensive generators. \u003cbr/\u003eTaps are also running dry in homes, leaving residents waiting for days for water trucks to deliver expensive potable water because the City Council deliveries have become sporadic. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the shaky electric grid in Kenya relies on hydropower, and much of that was drawn from Masinga Dam which was shut down after another season of failed rains leading to water levels going too low for the machines to continue electricity supply. \u003cbr/\u003eSimilar agricultural and hydropower problems are expected to strike South American Andean nations, the Asian subcontinent and other regions as the effects of climate change melt the world's glaciers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe effects on the middle and upper classes people who are so often largely immune to the effects of climate change such as failed crops and spikes in food prices are now significant with the power rationing affecting residents countrywide becoming the topic of endless chatter in Nairobi. \u003cbr/\u003eJoseph Njoroge, the Managing Director of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company explains the problem.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When we are not able to get sufficient hydrogenation, there are several consequences. One of the consequences is of course because it is the major source of our energy, we have not had adequate power and we have had to even start scaling down the usage of power by some of our customers, particularly the domestic customers who we have had to be switching off power during the day in certain areas for a period of three days in one week.\" \u003cbr/\u003e The government is hoping that power rationing will help alleviate the problem in the short term, and officials at Kenya Power and Lighting Company say they want to overcome dependence on hydropower through wind power projects and coal in the next few years. \u003cbr/\u003eBilha Wambui, a hair dresser at a local salon in Nairobi says it is adversely affecting her business.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Power rationing has really affected our business. As a salon we cannot do without power, and we do not have generators. Power rationing has made us lose so many clients and has brought a lot of losses in our business.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIn the meantime, however, there are signals that Kenya's problems could only get worse. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a U.N. study issued in 2006, scientists predicted that the glacial rivers of Mount Kenya and the rest of East Africa may dry up in 15 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe problems could become devastating for the country, as a prosperous middle class is vital to helping Kenya rebound from the violent aftermath of a presidential election in 2007 that nearly tore the country apart and
