Stem cell test tubes under microscope\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States government funding of stem cell research continues to be a controversial topic on Capitol Hill, Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eSupporters of research using embryonic stem cells are pointing to two new endorsements as they urge President George W. Bush to allow U.S. government funds for the work.\u003cbr/\u003eA federal health research report released Wednesday said scientists should be free to pursue all avenues of research, including those that involve human embryos.\u003cbr/\u003eSenator Bill Frist, the only physician in the Senate, announced his support for federal funding of the practice.\u003cbr/\u003eFrist noted his opposition to abortion, but pointedly told the Senate committee that both embryonic and adult stem cell research should be funded.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes in the potential of the research and told the Senate that scientists could be on the verge of breakthroughs in treatments of major diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eNot all witnesses before the committee were as positive about the research as Frist.\u003cbr/\u003eSam Brownback, a Republican Senator, asked the committee to recognise that an embryonic stem cell is life and therefore such research could potentially be ending a life.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Brownback urged the committee to outlaw embryonic stem cell research, he did acknowledge that adult stem cell research should continue.\u003cbr/\u003eHe noted that while successful research with adult stem
