Up to 80,000 asylum-seekers from Syria, Eritrea, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries are likely to arrive this year - the highest number since 1992.While many...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSweden is expecting its largest influx of refugees in decades. \u003cbr/\u003eUp to 80,000 asylum-seekers from Syria, Eritrea, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries are likely to arrive this year - the highest number since 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile many Syrians are granted permanent residence status, the processing period can be long - and some Swedes complain that the system is too generous.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmed Marzouk, Yosief Mebrahtu and Ahmed Hesam have little in common.\u003cbr/\u003eMarzouk and Hesam are both from Damascus, but from different sides in the conflict engulfing their country.\u003cbr/\u003eYosief Mebrahtu is from Eritrea, here escaping from what he describes as \"political oppression.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite their differences, they have all ended up here in a hostel for asylum seekers in Skondal, around 12 kilometres south of the centre of Stockholm, the Swedish capital city.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Swedish Migration Board which is tasked with the care of asylum seekers, so far this year, almost 50 thousand people have applied for asylum in the Nordic country, an increase of 174 percent in comparison to last year.\u003cbr/\u003eUp to 80-thousand are expected by the end of 2014.\u003cbr/\u003eThe largest group of those applying are Syrian, with over 18-thousand people from the war-torn country submitting applications in Sweden.\u003cbr/\u003eThat level has not been reached since 1992, during the Yugoslav war.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Eurostat, the statistics office of the European Union Commission, the level of asylum seeker applications in Sweden is higher than all other EU states barring Germany, a country around nine times larger.\u003cbr/\u003eHesam initially moved to Egypt after the outbreak of war in Syria, but decided to continue to Sweden as Egypt was experiencing its own upheavals.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's been in Sweden for a little over a month and says he appreciates the feeling of safety.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I love it in Swedish (Sweden), and nice people and safe for us. And the people of Swedish and the country Swedish (Sweden) gave me freedom,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHe misses Syria, but says that Sweden is now his new home.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Look, I will tell you what the difference (is) between Swedish (Sweden) and Syria,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Like you have mother and wife. Sorry, what you canï¿½t take. Mother and wife is very important in your life. Here, like my wife in Swedish. And Syria is my mother.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2011, some 27-thousand Syrians have been granted permanent residence status in Sweden.\u003cbr/\u003eThat means they can enjoy most of the same benefits as Swedish citizens do.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce their permit has been approved, an application can also be made to allow family members to move to the country.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, with the dramatic increase in applications, it now takes an average of 131 days to process.\u003cbr/\u003eYosief Mebrahtu says he travelled to Italy from Eritrea by boat.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom there he made his way overland to Sweden.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he's grateful for the help he's received so far:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sweden is welcoming people,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Peaceful land. And more than that actually. The treatment they are giving us as a refugee actually I canï¿½t forget it in my whole life. This is from hell to heaven.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAhmed Marzouk says he made his way from Damascus to Turkey, from there he travelled through Europe, eventually arriving in Sweden.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I want to be a citizen in this country. Build this country. Not just to sit and get money and food. That's not my target in this area of land, of the earth,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eMarzouk's wife and two children are still in Damascus. He's currently waiting for his residency application to be approved so they can join him here.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it's not easy to enjoy the relative comfort of Sweden, while knowing his family is still stuck in a war zone.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Very difficult and hard for me,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you sit and thinking 'Are they alive or they die? Or they shoot them or not.' Every day you have to call them or to find a way if you have a connection with them to know if they are alive or if they die. Yeah, that is the situation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe rules that govern asylum seekers and refugees are essentially the same in all European Union (EU) countries and governed by treaties, not national laws.\u003cbr/\u003eWhere Sweden differs is that the migration board took the decision in September 2013 to approve permanent residency, rather than temporary residency, to people fleeing Syria.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is perhaps one reason why so many refugees travel all the way here to the north of Europe before handing in their asylum application.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a July 2014 report by the UN High Commission for Refugees, over 33-thousand Syrians have applied for asylum in Sweden since the start of the conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's the highest number in any EU country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next country is Germany with over 29-thousand applications followed by Bulgaria with around six-thousand.\u003cbr/\u003eUlrik Ashuvud, a manager within the Swedish Migration Board, says the current flow of people to Sweden is very large and not just from Syria but also Eritrea.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of the people that come here need protection,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a great flow of people from Syria and another from Eritrea as well as a lot of people from other countries. They come here and they have the possibility to gain permanent residency and we try to process those applications as fast as possible.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBut the numbers of Syrian refugees in the countries neighbouring Syria dwarfs the numbers of refugees in the EU.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the same UNHCR report, there are over one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon and over 700-thousand in Turkey.\u003cbr/\u003eThe numbers of refugees seeking asylum in Sweden has caused some discontent here.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the parliamentary elections held today (14 September), far right, anti-immigration party Sweden Democrats, are expected to double their support to 10 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a debate ahead of the election, party leader Jimmie Akesson criticises current Swedish immigration policy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We see an increase in segregation,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There has been an increase in people standing outside the system. This is because the immigration policies have been irresponsible.
