Samaranch running with Olympic torch \u003cbr/\u003eFormer International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch died on Wednesday at a hospital in Spain. He was 89.\u003cbr/\u003eHe had been admitted to the Quiron Hospital in Barcelona on Sunday after experiencing heart trouble and died at 1325 local time (1125 GMT).\u003cbr/\u003eSamaranch led the IOC from 1980 to 2001 and his 21-year term was marked by both the unprecedented growth of the Games and the corruption scandal that led to the ouster of 10 IOC members for receiving improper benefits from the 2002 Salt Lake bid committee.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrent IOC president Jacques Rogge expressed his distress over the news of Samaranch''s death, saying he was deeply saddened by the passing of the man who built up the Olympic Games of the modern era\u003cbr/\u003eSamaranch was considered one of the defining presidents for building the IOC into a powerful global organisation and firmly establishing the Olympics as a world force.\u003cbr/\u003eSmall in stature and shy by nature, he appeared uncomfortable appearing or speaking in public. \u003cbr/\u003eBut behind the scenes, he was a skilled and sometimes ruthless operator who could forge consensus in the often fractious Olympic movement and push IOC members to deliver exactly what he wanted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Samaranch era was perhaps the most eventful in IOC history, spanning political boycotts, the end of amateurism and the advent of professionalism, the explosion of commercialisation, a boom in growth and popularity of the Games, the scourge of doping and the Salt Lake crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Samaranch came to power in 1980, the IOC was virtually bankrupt and the Olympics were battered by boycotts, extremism and financial troubles.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he left, the IOC''s coffers were bulging from (b) billions of dollars in commercial revenues, the boycott era was over and the Games were firmly established as the world''s favourite sports festival.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Samaranch''s presidency was also clouded by controversy. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was hounded by critics who said the Games were over-commercialised and riddled with performance-enhancing drugs and that he perpetuated the IOC image of a private club for a pampered elite.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics also attacked him for his ties to the Franco era in Spain and his autocratic style.\u003cbr/\u003eSamaranch had been bothered by health problems ever since stepping down nine years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was hospitalised for 11 days in Switzerland with \"extreme fatigue\" in 2001 after returning from the IOC session in Moscow, where Rogge\u003cbr/\u003ewas elected as his successor.\u003cbr/\u003eSamaranch was hospitalised shortly afterward in Barcelona for what was described as high blood pressure. \u003cbr/\u003eHe received regular dialysis treatment for kidney trouble and spent two days in a hospital in Madrid in 2007 after a dizzy spell.\u003cbr/\u003eIn October 2009, he underwent hospital checks in Monaco after feeling ill at a sports conference.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the advancing age and medical troubles, Samaranch continued to travel to IOC meetings around the world.  \u003cbr/\u003eEven in retirement, he remained active in Olympic circles and tried to help Madrid secure the games of 2012 and 2016. \u003cbr/\u003eMadrid
