Various of women eating vegan meal\u003cbr/\u003eWhen former US President and burger lover, Bill Clinton, declares he is going vegan for health reasons, it's time to take notice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with veganism also getting celebrity endorsement, what are the health benefits or problems associated with this meat and dairy free diet?.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer US President Bill Clinton is perhaps the world's most famous vegan.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen in office Mr Clinton made no secret of his love for junk food - particularly the high-fat, meaty variety found in fast food restaurants.\u003cbr/\u003eBut since leaving office Mr Clinton has had two separate heart procedures. He chose to become vegan on medical advice, seeking to reverse cardiovascular damage.\u003cbr/\u003eSo successful has Mr Clinton's dietary revolution been that in 2010 People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named Mr Clinton as Person of the Year estimating his new diet has \"spared the lives of 200 land and sea animals a year\".\u003cbr/\u003eBut convincing people to eat vegan isn't easy. Say vegan food to most people and they imagine nothing but fruit and vegetables.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at restaurants like Simply Authentic Food (SAF) they specialise in raw, vegan dishes.\u003cbr/\u003eNothing is cooked at a temperature hotter than 48 degrees Celcius and all of the food is non-artificial.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chef has put together this Zuccini Pappardelle, with strips of zuccini tossed in marinara sauce, caper berries and olives.\u003cbr/\u003eBut what else do vegans eat? \u003cbr/\u003eJane Clarke, nutritionist at the Portobello Clinic, defines the diet by what a vegan can't eat.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"A vegan diet is a very strict vegetarian diet and definitely doesn't have any dairy produce in.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vegan Society defines it as \"someone who tries to live without exploiting animals, for the benefit of animals, people and the planet. Vegans eat a plant-based diet, with nothing coming from animals - no meat, milk, eggs or honey\". Many vegan lifestyles also avoid leather, wool, and silk clothing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with such a restrictive menu veganism isn't suitable for everybody and requires a lot of careful management, to ensure the diet doesn't miss out on essential vitamins and minerals.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren need to take especial care before starting a vegan diet.\u003cbr/\u003eThis young boy is enjoying a plate of vegan food at the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand - where vegan dishes are served every year as part of a religious celebration.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Thais, who are predominantly Buddhist, at some point in their lives practice vegetarianism as a way of cleansing the body or to improve one's Karma. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Jane Clarke warns: \"We have a few concerns over the vegan diet especially with children because you have very low sources of iron. Now iron is a mineral which is needed for healthy blood cells, for growth and because you don't have the easiest form of iron from animal products like meat then it can be quite hard for parents to bring up a child as a vegan. It's not impossible because you can get fortified soya products that iron, and breakfast cereals and things like that. But iron can be one mineral that a vegan diet can be lacking in.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVegan diets can also be naturally short of Calcium and vitamin B12, so Clarke recommends eating fortified soya or cereal products, or taking supplements.\u003cbr/\u003eFor this reason, another at-risk group are pregnant women. However, Clarke says although it's difficult, there's no reason why a pregnant woman can't continue a vegan diet with thorough monitoring.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"To be pregnant and to be vegan can be quite hard. Of course, we're making very general comments about vegan women and you get incredibly well knowledged, fantastic eating pregnant women that eat nuts, if they're good for them, beans, lentils, seed pastes, nut butters, obviously if they don't have an alegy or an atopic gene in their family. But it can be quite hard to get enough calcium, protein, iron - unless you're pretty clever at juggling all the food groups.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not just Bill Clinton who is espousing a vegan lifestyle - veganism has an altogether more unlikely champion.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of the most infamous myths in rock, Ozzy Osbourne once bit the head off a live bat - well now it's more likely to be a broccoli.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former front man with Black Sabbath recently revealed his new vegan regime on a daytime US talk show. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it's been less than a month on the new diet, the former hard-living rocker claims he feels better already.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the road Osbourne claims it's all to easy to grab a burger, so the \"no meat and no dairy\" rule limits the amount of junk he eats. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it seems the Osbourne-effect is convincing others to try veganism - but sticking to it is the hardest part, says Clarke.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the huge celebrity culture and putting some people out there who say they're vegan and follow the vegan lifestyle has encouraged some people to become vegan themselves.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo just how far is veganism entrenched in celebrity culture?\u003cbr/\u003eAt this red carpet event in Los Angeles, singers and actresses give their verdict on the vegan diet.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I actually was years ago, about 20 - 21 years ago. I just like to source where the meat I'm eating is coming from, I'm very conscious of it but I'm not vegan, that's the main part of my diet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBritish rapper Estelle can't even consider going vegan. \u003cbr/\u003e\"No, I couldn't. Travelling as much as I do I think I have the survivor's instinct to take what's available.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut although these celebrities might be struggling to stay vegan, plenty of others are sticking to their diets.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the UK alone there are at least 150,000 vegans, according to figures provided by the Vegan Society.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in London's SAF restaurant and a fresh batch of lettuce is being prepared for the day's service.\u003cbr/\u003eSo is it time to consider turning vegan for health reasons? Not according to nutritionist Clarke.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So I would just encourage someone to be vegan if they have huge moral issues with eating animal products, it wouldn't for me be a choice over it's the only way to be healthy,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the challenge for newly-declared vegan, Ozzy Osbourne, is whether he can stick to his new diet over Christmas and New
