Time-lapse shots of Shard under construction ++MUTE++\u003cbr/\u003eThe tallest building in western Europe, the Shard in London, will be officially inaugurated on July 5th 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ceremony will be conducted by Qatar's prime minister Sheikh Hamad and Britain's Prince Andrew. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's taken twelve years to build, but the skyscraper, named for its resemblance to a giant shard of glass, is now set to become one of London's most iconic sights. \u003cbr/\u003eThe building stands at 310 metres (1,016 feet), and dwarfs everything around it, including nearby Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has 95 stories and has been dubbed a \"vertical town\", to comprise apartments, offices, restaurants and a five-star hotel. \u003cbr/\u003eClose to the top will be London's highest viewing gallery, offering 360-degree views stretching more than 40 miles (64 kilometres). \u003cbr/\u003eThe Shard, which cost 1.5 (b) billion British pounds (2.3 (b) billion US dollars) to develop and build, is due to open in stages over the course of next year.\u003cbr/\u003eIts architect Renzo Piano, the man who was joint designer of the Pompidou Centre in Paris, told a news conference on the Shard's 14th floor that the building wasn't designed to dominate London.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim was to make the city more beautiful, he said, pointing out that a two-year public inquiry into the project had backed his vision.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This building was not going to be a symbol of arrogance, a symbol of power, but more like a sparkling, quite gentle spire, playing, flirting with the weather,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Shard was conceived during the economic boom at the turn of the millennium, and financed with money from Qatar.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the skyscraper was going up, much of the global economy was heading in the other direction.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the recession doesn't seem to be worrying the Shard's developer, Irvine Sellar. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said a significant number of tenants had already been signed up, and he's expecting the building will be fully rented out by the end of 2014.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're not nervous,\" he said. \"We're confident we've got very strong financial backers who have provided long-term funding for this building to see us through this recession.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNot everyone shares his confidence. Jack Sidders of Estates Gazette, said Sellar and his Qatari backers were taking a huge risk. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the general perception would be that it's an incredible gamble,\" Sidders said.
