But I look at it this way, in arriving last we got to occupy the first spot on the National Mall. We want people to understand that because lots of people, quite frankly, think we are dead and are only elements of the past of this hemisphere and this country. And that is not the case, and that is an important, in fact its very central to the National Museum of the American Indian and how it presents itself to all people who visit us.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15. Dancers swirling in a mass of colour\u003cbr/\u003eA museum dedicated to Native Americans is being constructed on the last vacant piece of land in the centre of Washington D-C. \u003cbr/\u003eThe National Museum of the American Indian, part of the Smithsonian Institutions, is being built within sight of the Capitol dome.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of North American native communities gathered nearby on Sunday to celebrate the construction of the museum and the harvest season.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the inaugural Pow wow on the mall, hundreds of dancers in traditional dress, danced and chanted in the historic manner of their forefathers.\u003cbr/\u003ePow wows are social gatherings of hundreds of Native Americans who follow dances started centuries ago by their ancestors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pow wow is under continuous revision at it adapts to contemporary social and cultural customs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new museum will open in the autumn of 2004 and is expected to receive six million  visitors each year.\u003cbr/\u003eScores of Native American tribal councils and Native American architects were consulted on the design of the building, which will include a waterfall, areas of natural earth,
