Medium shot guests at music session
Lafayette, Louisiana is a small southern city in the United States and the centre of a Cajun culture.
The Cajun people are descendants of French peasants who settled in the East coast provinces of Canada in the early 18th century, and came to Louisiana after being exiled by the British in the mid-19th century.
Modern day Cajuns keep their culture alive through music and particularly through the accordion.
At Vermillion Ville, a historical park near Lafayette, Louisiana, French-influenced Cajun culture is still very much alive.
Located along the banks of the Bayou Vermillion, the park showcases the architecture, clothing and crafts of Cajun and Creole settlers between 1765 and 1890.
The grounds include six original homes, where craftspeople like Joycelyn Trahan show visitors how their ancestors lived.
Trahan uses a foot-powered sewing machine passed down to her by her mother-in-law to prepare Mardi Gras masks for local children to decorate.
She says she's been sewing from a very young age.
The Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is another local institution dedicated to preserving the region's past.
Among the many French settlers who migrated to Canada in the early 17th century, one particular group settled in Nova Scotia, known at that time as Acadia.
The Acadians farmed, fished and lived in peace.
They spoke French and practiced Catholicism. In 1755, they were driven out of Nova Scotia by the English because they refused to pledge allegiance to the English flag, give up their religion, and stop speaking French.
The wandering Acadians eventually found a new home amid the swamps and waterways of southern Louisiana.
They were accepted by the French and Spanish settlers in that area, and it appears that the term "Cajun" results from a neighbourly mispronunciation of Acadian.
Researchers say that between 1764 to 1788, about 3000 Acadian settlers arrived in the area.
Park ranger Elista Istre introduces local children to Cajun country's wildlife and culture.
She explains that the Cajun's ancestors the Acadians left France in the 1600's for Nova Scotia. After being sent into exile by the British they were finally granted a colony in Louisiana by the Spanish.
Music is a key element of Cajun culture, with the fiddle and the accordion taking centre stage.
Istre says that accordions were introduced by the Germans and that they became popular because they could carry sound further.
The passion for Cajun music persists with the help of master instrument makers like Mark Savoy.
At Savoy's Music centre near Eunice, Louisiana, an accordion is a work of art, and it takes 40-50 hours to make just one.
Savoy started making accordions 42 years ago, betting that the region's unique culture and vibrant music would gain popularity in the years to come.
He says that by building accordions, Cajun music will become more and more popular.
He was right - he's now a well-known figure in local music, with orders for the shining pieces coming from as far off as Oregon, London and Scotland.
Informal gatherings are opportunities for friends to get together and dance to Cajun music, sung in French.
Many learn the language through the local music, with bands like Les Freres Michot gaining popularity.
Tommy Michot, a member of the band says that the spirit of enjoyment is key, as can be heard in the French-language lyrics.
As well as the accordion, the guitar, violin and triangle all accompany the singing.
Together, museums, local craftspeople, musicians and
