families are finding it difficult to find the money to pay for the celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003eToday (9 December 2008) is the start of the four day festival of Eid al-Adha.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistanis have been preparing by purchasing animals to sacrifice as part of a religious ritual celebrated by Muslims worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eEid al-Adha festival is the second biggest Muslim celebration after Eid al-Fitre and falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja on the lunar Islamic Calendar.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is marked by Muslims worldwide in commemoration of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Pakistan's largest city of Karachi people normally flock to the main market where hundreds of thousands of cattle markets are set up each year for the occasion.\u003cbr/\u003eKarachi has a population of 14 million people and is the financial and economic hub of Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the scores of people hoping to buy a sacrificial animal is Iftikhar Ahmed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 55 year old travelled to the market with his wife hoping to buy a cow for no more than 20-thousand Pakistani rupees, the equivalent of 253 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he is disappointed as high prices may mean he cannot afford to make a sacrifice this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe economic slowdown, job cuts and high inflation have made it difficult for many Muslims to buy animals within their price range.\u003cbr/\u003eBut animal trader, Mohammad Afzal, says the cost of raising cattle has also gone up and has to be passed on to buyers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lack of sales is having a knock on effect to those selling knives used for the sacrifice.\u003cbr/\u003eKnife seller, Mohammad Kamran, says prices have increased so much that he wonders how is family manages to survive.\u003cbr/\u003eThe high prices of animals have forced many to consider sharing animals, and then they can carry out the sacrifice together.\u003cbr/\u003eAdnan Moosani is one of those people and he believes he is not alone.\u003cbr/\u003ePotential buyers such as Mohammad Zahid can find other buyers through an online market.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the high prices have seen other new trends develop.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a society that has long relied on cash sales, people are now using credit cards to pay for their
