We have to do some experimentation. We haven't really done a lot of that experimentation. We've only done some real tests with five wheels. We're going to continue to do some testing here on Earth with the five-wheel drive, to see how it does, and maybe with less wheels, to understand the performance of the system, and how we would actually drive it and how we would actually use it. But we know that when the system normally drives, one wheel may be off the ground, or another wheel may be caught on a rock, and the other wheels will keep driving and push those wheels through the obstacle, over the rock, or up the slope. So in fact, the system is designed to operate on fewer wheels just in the normal traverses because of where the wheels end up.\"\u003cbr/\u003e8. Pan across Endurance Crater, from Opportunity rover\u003cbr/\u003eNASA's Mars rover Spirit has developed a problem with one of its six wheels, but mission officials said on Tuesday they believe the robot geologist can continue working.\u003cbr/\u003eThe right front wheel has become baulky requiring more electrical current to turn, according to Mark Adler, the mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.\u003cbr/\u003eEngineers are considering whether to simply continue using the wheel until it fails or drive on five wheels and only use the problem wheel when necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spirit rover also had a problem last week receiving commands from Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe communication problem was caused by cold, which caused the rover's receiver to drift out of the frequency range in which the commands were sent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe range was broadened and the rover received commands after the loss of only one day of work, Adler said.\u003cbr/\u003eAdler said the problem with Spirit's wheel seemed to be caused by age, and that the other five wheels will be monitored closely given that they have roughly the same mileage.\u003cbr/\u003eMore testing will be done on Earth to determine exactly what functionality the rover could maintain if the wheel fails completely, and if other wheels follow suit.\u003cbr/\u003eSpirit and the twin rover Opportunity landed on Mars in January and completed their primary mission. They are now in extended missions.\u003cbr/\u003eSpirit is exploring the vast Gusev Crater region and is at the base of the Columbia Hills, which it will begin to climb.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the opposite side of Mars, Opportunity has entered a deep crater named Endurance to explore stratified rock that could open a window deeper into the geological history of the Red
