Various of crowded shopping street\u003cbr/\u003eFears over job security, spiralling bills and surviving the global financial crisis are causing sleepless nights and damaging our health, according to researchers in the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Sleep Well, Live Well report released today (Wednesday 18th March) says insomnia is having a profound effect on our happiness. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost half of the people questioned by the researchers felt depressed.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe Wall Street crash of October 1929 didn't just shake the confidence of American society, it dealt a fundamental blow to the global economy. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the western world was plunged into the worst depression anyone had experienced at the time. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the US unemployment soared above thirteen million.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost eighty years on and the world's economy is again in deep recession - and that, is making most of us stressed and sleep deprived according to a Live Well, Sleep Well survey.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's no longer workers who need to beat the clock - like those in the emergency services or city traders who chase foreign markets through different time zones, or market traders who work through the night to ensure produce gets delivered across the country - who are likely to be deprived of sleep.\u003cbr/\u003eToday's report claims that two out of five people in the UK suffer sleep problems and that half of these people blame stress and worry over financial problems for their sleeplessness.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish television presenter Selina Scott has worked for American and British television news networks - and helped launch a breakfast TV programme in the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she knows how badly disrupted sleep can affect health. \u003cbr/\u003eScott spent years forcing herself out of bed in the middle of the night to appear on television looking alert and fresh at six in the morning every day of the week.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to help employees cope with lack of sleep, some companies have installed sleeping pods in the workplace so that they can catch a short nap during the day.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd more than two hundred publically funded district hospitals around the United Kingdom contain specialised units for sleep disorders, and that is in addition to the private clinics which cater for the overstressed executive. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Adrian Williams heads the Sleep Disorder's Unit at London's St Thomas' Hospital. He says he's seeing more patients who have financial worries. Half of the people who responded to the Live Well, Sleep Well report said they were depressed as a result of the bad economy. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is not the same as clinical depression, which is a medical condition. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Dr Williams says there is certainly a link between depression and insomnia. He says insomnia can be a predictor of sleeping debt , which is where you go for a long period of  time without sleep. He says depression can often occur with insomnia. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United States, a University of Texas study in 2007 estimated that insomniacs used health services more, and annually cost between $92.5 billion (US) and $107.5 billion (US).\u003cbr/\u003eRussell Foster, who is Professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford University, says night shifts can pose even greater problems.  Studies in the US, Germany and Canada show that night shift workers are likely to be more more immuno suppressed.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Live Well, Sleep Well researchers say a third of the people who described themselves as sleep deprived didn't seek help because they've become resigned to the effects of being tired. \u003cbr/\u003eSleep is the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored. \u003cbr/\u003eKey Findings of the Sleep Well, Live Well report :\u003cbr/\u003eIn the UK 20% of people sleep less than 7 hours a night. \u003cbr/\u003e41% of people who experience sleep problems say this occurs on a regular basis, this is particularly high for those over the age of 65.\u003cbr/\u003eStress-induced sleep problems due to worry about financial matters likely to worsen due to the continuing economic environment.\u003cbr/\u003eCauses of lost sleep\u003cbr/\u003e20% of people surveyed agreed that they had lost 'more sleep than usual' due to worry, this increases to nearly 25% amongst women and to over 25% in women in the younger age groups.\u003cbr/\u003eFinancial concerns are now the leading cause of sleep problems (39%) rising to 50% in those aged 16-44.\u003cbr/\u003eImpact of lost sleep\u003cbr/\u003e49% of people with poor sleep are left feeling depressed or unhappy. \u003cbr/\u003eThose driving home from working a night shift have a 40 times increased risk of a car. accident, this compares to a 4 times increased risk for people who are drunk. \u003cbr/\u003e30% of people with sleep problems say they take longer than normal to do anything and just under a third saying they cannot do everything they need to.\u003cbr/\u003e15% said they found it hard to communicate or speak to others.\u003cbr/\u003e45% found it hard to concentrate.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople with sleep problems are also more likely to complain of memory loss (11% more) and loss of libido (8% more) than normal sleepers.\u003cbr/\u003eDealing with sleeping problems\u003cbr/\u003eA third of people with sleep problems suffer in silence and do nothing\u003cbr/\u003ePassive relaxation is now the most popular way for people to deal with sleep deficits\u003cbr/\u003eMethodology - the survey was conducted by the Future Foundation \u003cbr/\u003eAll those taking part in the survey were required to have perceived sleep problems or disorders. \u003cbr/\u003eA total of 1003 respondents claimed to have suffered from insomnia, lack of sleep or sleep disturbance in the past 5 years. \u003cbr/\u003eSource: Future Foundation Base: 1,003
