their hips to the heavy beat of African drums, marking the beginning of Venezuela's exuberant Corpus Christi celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people packed the narrow streets of this centuries-old coastal town inhabited by the descendants of African slaves whose ancestors toiled on Spanish-run cocoa plantations.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this year's celebration was different from those of past years - for first time in 95 years, Corpus Christi coincided with the festival of San Juan Bautista.\u003cbr/\u003eCorpus Christi is usually celebrated exclusively by the \"Dancing Devils\" in mid-June, but this year the celebration date fell on 24 June - the same day revellers pay their respects to John the Baptist, a patron saint to many living along Venezuela's Caribbean coast.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This coincidence only happens every 70 or 80 years,\" said the chief of the Devil dancers while watching the spectacle that attracted roughly 5,000 of the town's inhabitants and tourists to a central plaza in the middle of town.\u003cbr/\u003eA dancer kicked off this year's celebration, beating on a drum after dawn to wake up the town's inhabitants.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin minutes, men, women and children of all ages emerged from their homes, flooding the plaza. \u003cbr/\u003eWearing black, long-sleeve shirts, trousers painted with colourful figures including saints and bells hanging from belts, they held devil masks and vigorously shook maracas.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the church bell rang, signalling midday, the pounding of drums began and resonated throughout town.
