UNICEF and other aid agencies have set up a health post in the camp at Chaquelane and have been testing people for...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAt the largest camp for victims of the flooding in Mozambique, relief workers fear a fatal outbreak of malaria. \u003cbr/\u003eUNICEF and other aid agencies have set up a health post in the camp at Chaquelane and have been testing people for malaria.\u003cbr/\u003eOut of five thousand people tested for malaria, three thousand were diagnosed positive. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors are calling it an epidemic and say it is worrying that some of the malaria strains are drug resistant and so very difficult to treat.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Chaquelane, 100 miles north of Maputo, is the largest camp for those displaced by the floods.\u003cbr/\u003e40-thousand displaced people are living here in the poorest of conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eClean water is scarce and sanitary conditions appalling - the perfect conditions for an outbreak of malaria.\u003cbr/\u003eRelief workers at the health post set up by UNICEF in Chaquelane, are dispensing Fansidar - a strong antidote to malaria.\u003cbr/\u003eEven under normal circumstances, malaria is Mozambique's biggest health problem, killing more people than A-I-D-S each year.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003eMalaria is the single greatest problem in terms of all the displaced people here. Over 5000 people that have visited the health post here in 6 days over three thousand of those have been treated for malaria. So it's three fifths of all of the cases treated are malaria. So it is the single greatest health challenge in the camp at the moment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ian MacLeod, UNICEF\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to UNICEF some of the malaria is drug resistant and so very difficult to treat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe drug resistant strain poses a specific risk to children - especially malnourished children with little or no immunity to infection.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a real risk that people, particularly children, can die from malaria if they are not treated with the new drug protocol. Much of the malaria in this country is resistant to chloroquine, so there is a new drug protocol.
