began\u003cbr/\u003epreliminary discussions of what the elements of the meeting would\u003cbr/\u003ebe and what would constitute a successful preparation for a good\u003cbr/\u003eoutcome of that meeting... i think the chinese in conversations\u003cbr/\u003ewith me especially about taiwan made clear how seriously they\u003cbr/\u003eregard the issue that we've been talking about for the last couple\u003cbr/\u003eof months and we did not receive demands or threats..in think the\u003cbr/\u003echinese again used the occasion of my visit to express the\u003cbr/\u003eseriousness of their reaction and i also had ample opportunity to\u003cbr/\u003eexplain the rationale, the circumstances, this was not an area in\u003cbr/\u003ewhich we bridged many differences, but i think it was a unique\u003cbr/\u003eopportunity to understand better the attitudes in both beijing and\u003cbr/\u003ewashington and for that reason i think communication was better\u003cbr/\u003ewithout, as i say, bridging fundamental differences.... as you\u003cbr/\u003eknow mrs clinton is leading the u.s. delegation to participate in\u003cbr/\u003ethe fourth world conference on women. i stressed our desire
