Wide of the Holly shrine.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity forces were on full alert as thousands of Shiite pilgrims made their way to the shrine of Imam Moussa Kadhim in Kazimiyah, Baghdad, on Sunday, after snipers opened fire. \u003cbr/\u003eBody searches were carried out in front of the entrance to the shrine while troops watched closely from the rooftops as the pilgrims arrived, waving the green flag of Islam and the banners of their different tribes.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier, sniper attacks carried out within the mostly Sunni districts of Fadhil, Haifa and Saligh had left 16 pilgrims dead and 230 injured. The death toll is expected to rise, according to a health ministry spokesman. \u003cbr/\u003eThe violence was not unexpected given the sectarian strife that rages between Shiites and Sunnis, which along with the Sunni Arab insurgency, has become the biggest challenge for the unity national government and its ally, the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eMany fear the violence, which is claiming about 100 lives a day, will lead to civil war.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kazimiyah, the Shiites, wearing white shrouds to symbolise their willingness to die for Islam, chanted \"God bless (Prophet) Muhammad and his descendants,\" as they converged on the shrine from all parts of Baghdad.    \u003cbr/\u003eShiites believe that Kadhim, one of the 12 saints of the Shiite sect who died in 799 AD, was poisoned in prison by a Sunni caliph. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is buried inside the sprawling golden-domed shrine along with his grandson.    \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, an estimated thousand people died during the Imam Kadhim commemoration when rumours of suicide bombers triggered a mass stampede on a bridge across the Tigris River. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was the biggest single day death toll since the US-led invasion in March 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eShiites were prevented from mustering huge crowds at religious ceremonies during Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime. \u003cbr/\u003eBut since Saddam's ouster in 2003, Shiite politicians and religious leaders have encouraged huge turnouts as a demonstration of the majority sect's power. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Kadhim ritual is taking place during a major US-Iraqi
