Mid of children at school. \u003cbr/\u003eWorkers in Indonesia are giving old shipping containers a new lease of life by converting them into school rooms, offices and hotels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe low cost and versatility of the steel boxes make them an affordable option for Indonesians in need of a roof over their head.\u003cbr/\u003eA construction yard in Jakarta in Indonesia with one vital difference: these containers are about to be recycled for a completely different use.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2008, construction company 'First Container' has been using this yard to convert old shipping containers into various commercial structures including offices, hotels, restaurants, music studios and schools.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile containers like these usually have a life of around ten years before they must be fixed or replaced, now they're beginning a new life as custom-modified spaces designed to order for clients.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the 1970s, mining companies in Indonesia have turned shipping containers into portable offices on location.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they have numerous uses such as offices, hotels and schools.\u003cbr/\u003eThe marketing director of First Container, Nanda Berlian says the increased demand for modified containers stems from the high cost of living in the cities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In cities like Jakarta, the prices of land and building have become very expensive,\" says Berlian. \"One of the solutions is to build using a container that is cheaper than a permanent structure.\" \u003cbr/\u003eNow, business is booming for companies such as Berlain's as customers choose to use containers for their offices due to their cheap price and the ease of transporting them around.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the last five years, First Container has seen a six-fold increase in the demand for modified containers, which are often fitted with air-conditioning, layered walls and ceramic flooring.\u003cbr/\u003eBerlain says that, despite demand, they only use containers which are in 80 percent perfect condition as this ensures their long life.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would only use containers that do not have rust or leaks, otherwise they will not last very long,\" he says. \"This is important because we aim to modify containers that can be used for another 10 to 20 years.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIn the city of Depok in West Java, modified containers are being put to good use.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2008, shipping containers were used to create a school for children from poor backgrounds in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe school provides free education to almost 3,000 students ranging from four to fifteen years old.\u003cbr/\u003eNurrohim, the school's supervisor, opted for a container school because it was cheap to build and required less maintenance when compared to traditional buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eNurrohim says the school took extensive steps to make sure the children would be able to study in a comfortable and safe environment.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For the exterior of the container, we use heat and noise absorbers as well as thick plywood,\" says Nurrohim. \"For the interior, we use ceramics to make the school as comfortable as a regular classroom or office.
