And the methodology that we have used was completely new. Because negotiating, that was only a part of the project and not the biggest part. The biggest part of the project was to support these countries in their effort to meet European standards and European rules. I must say that was a very successful project and the fact that the new member states are already now modern democracies, open societies and functioning market economies is, first of all, result of their own efforts. They have done that. So they have very, very strong interest to see Europe developing and improving. The other element they will bring is, of course, economically. These countries are emerging markets. You can compare my feeling to feelings of the coach of a football team that is performing for the first time. This means that the European peace project has proven itself once again. And it would be especially for Germany, which has a very long Eastern border, mean peace and political stability for a very long time and the advantage for Germany cannot be expressed in terms of money. There are not only political advantages, there are also economic advantages and Germany profits from the fast growing markets in Central and Eastern Europe, probably more than other member states.\" \u003cbr/\u003e12. Commissioner Verheugen leaving\u003cbr/\u003eThe enlargement of the EU on 1 May will finally bring an end to the \"superficial\" post-war division of Europe, according to Gunther Verheugen, the EU commissioner for enlargement. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the man in charge of the enlargement process, Verheugen admits he's nervous - but insists it will be a good thing for all European countries, particularly for both the accession countries and established EU members.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What the new member states will bring is a new dynamism, new dynamics for the process of European integration,\" said Verheugen. \"Especially the young people in those countries know exactly that their future is closely linked to the future of european integration.
