Aerials of flooded streets in New Orleans\u003cbr/\u003eAs Hurricane Katrina's heavy winds began to rip through the Gulf Coast, officials warned New Orleans residents to leave the city immediately. \u003cbr/\u003eAs many evacuated to the homes of family and friends in neighbouring states, the Wijngaarde family simply had nowhere to go. \u003cbr/\u003e\"On Sunday, we left our home. We took the bus to go to the Superdome and we went in there,\" said Lucidalva Wijngaarde. With the exception of her daughter Cristiane Maria and her grandchildren, Lucidalva's family lives in Southeastern Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eAs authorities escorted her family to the city's makeshift shelter, Lucidalva said she only expected to stay for \"one days, two days no more than that\" and added that \"after three days everything just got worse. It was very bad.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLucidalva's daughter Cristiane was concerned about the well-being of her two young children, seven-year-old Tiane Marie and nine-month-old Tiago Amir, as many people in the Superdome grew restless and became violent. \u003cbr/\u003e\"People stole, there were little girls dying in there. Men killing and raping little girls and they told me I couldn't let my little girl out,\" Cristiane said, as little Tiane rubbed her mothers arm. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Texas governor Rick Perry's office, 139-thousand hurricane refugees were in 137 shelters in Texas, and another 100-thousand were estimated to be in hotels and motels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wijngaarde family was brought to a local Dallas hotel, after family members in Brazil contacted the Brazilian Consulate. \u003cbr/\u003eThey had spent five days in the Superdome without showering and with very little food and water. \u003cbr/\u003eNine-month-old Tiago had a fever, and was not seen by a doctor until a day after arriving to the shelter. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I can't believe this is the way this was handled in the United States, I just can't believe it,\" said Lucidalva.\u003cbr/\u003eState and federal officials are all facing public criticism for a slow response to the crisis. \u003cbr/\u003ePresident George W. Bush came under fire for waiting two days after Katrina hit - and a day after levee breaks drowned New Orleans and turned it into a place of lawless misery - to return to Washington, DC, from his August break in Texas to oversee the federal response.\u003cbr/\u003eIt took several days for food and water to reach the tens of thousands of desperate New Orleans residents who took shelter in the increasingly squalid and deadly Superdome and city convention centre. \u003cbr/\u003eOutlying areas suffered some of the same problems.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil's government news agency reported that 10-thousand Brazilians live in New Orleans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe governments of Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Venezuela, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago also reported efforts to reach
