And the driver has to be available to re-engage when the system's complete with its function.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the car is just a prototype, Honda says the technology could start appearing on Honda cars in the next few years. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This system uses long-range and medium-range radar, a stereo camera and a scanning laser to sense the surroundings,\" says Blumbergs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prototype car - an Acura RLX sedan - has cameras that monitor lane marking and multiple radar sensors on the front and sides. \u003cbr/\u003eOn top is a beacon that uses laser beams to continually scan the car's surroundings, similar to self-driving prototypes already introduced by Google, Ford and Toyota. \u003cbr/\u003eGPS also helps the car stay on a previously mapped course and follow the speed limit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You'll probably see some type of automated functionality in the vehicles around the 2020 time frame,\" says Blumbergs. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a loop around Detroit, the car's driver took his hands off the wheel as the car entered the freeway. \u003cbr/\u003eIt accelerated to the speed limit and applied the brakes if it got too close to a car in front of it. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen it needed to change lanes, it signalled and waited for an opening. \u003cbr/\u003eIt merged easily on to two other freeways and edged to the left to avoid a construction zone. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen it was ready to exit, the car reduced its speed to 35 miles (56 kilometres) per hour on the ramp.\u003cbr/\u003eThe driver's hands remained off the wheel for the entire eight mile (12 kilometre) loop. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Honda says the car will automatically turn control back over to the driver if it senses it can't handle a situation. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You are able in certain scenarios to give full control to the vehicle, and it can do what it needs to do. And then when the time's appropriate, the driver takes control back,\" says Blumbergs.\u003cbr/\u003eOne example: If a car cuts in front of the Honda too closely and fast braking is needed.\u003cbr/\u003eHonda has been working on this prototype car in Japan for about a year, but it's the result of decades of safety research.\u003cbr/\u003eBlumbergs says: \"We have a goal of zero crashes eventually, and we also have a goal of safety for everyone.
