Puppet master, Yaya...
A puppet master in Mali is breathing life into an ancient tradition for a new generation.
And through his puppetry he's trying to teach a new generation of Malinese children to dance to the rhythm of their ancestors.
Puppet master, Yaya Coulibaly's family have been making puppets for several generations in Mali, and now he is passing the skills down to his grandson.
Yaya Coulibaly began learning puppetry when he was 10 years old, picking up skills and using the puppets passed down from previous generations.
Coulibaly belongs to the Forgerons' caste, and he was determined to learn the art of carving, and creating puppets from his ancestors. He says he had to wait 10 years for approval from other members of his tribe.
"Instead of giving fish each morning to someone, it's better to teach him how to fish. As I grew up a child in the forgerons' caste, I told to myself I will willing to learn how to carve. From this family background, I could create an income and share it with the rest of the world. I had to wait for 10 years before I got approval from the elders' council. It hasn't been easy," he says.
The puppets are carved in the wood and assembled together. The parts are carved from the bark of local trees, and then joined together with string.
Once the puppet is carved, the puppeteer ties the strings. Traditional Mali puppets were made from natural coloured dyes from rocks and plants, but in recent times paint has replaced them.
Yaya Coulibaly studied at the International Institute of Marionette in France. To continue the traditions of this art, he has passed on his knowledge to his son, Bourama Coulibaly.
His son has been learning the art of puppetry for the past ten years, and enjoys dancing and handling the puppets.
"I started building puppets in 2000, my father taught me. Often he would tell me - Bourama, come closer, we shall work together, and we travelled together. What I like is dancing, handling puppets, dancing close to my father, making him laugh," he says.
Yaya Coulibaly is the leading custodian of the Bambara puppetry tradition, the oldest and richest of Africa's surviving puppetry traditions.
He owns 8,000 puppets, some of which he inherited from his family.
The puppets are a rare example of Malinese puppetry, and have been protected and cared for by his ancestors.
"It a unique collection in terms of originality for Mali and the rest of the world. My ancestors guarded them jealously. They gave them to my grand parents who gave them to my parents and my parents gave them to me. They were worthy of their mothers. There's no reason I don't do the same. So I try to preserve them while I am alive and give them to my children too," he says.
The puppets are used for rituals and ceremonies that take place in some villages across Mali to ask the gods for good rains, and crops.
Legend has it that Malinese puppets were created by bush country spirits that kidnapped a fisherman. During his time with the spirits, the fisherman learned the art of puppetry, and returned home to teach the skills of puppetry.
Yaya Coulibaly entertains children in his neighbourhood with regular puppet shows.
He says by manipulating the strings of his wooden creations, he is breathing life into the puppet. It's as though the puppet master is helping a child with his first steps, he says.
"One feel like one handles puppet but actually it's the contrary - it's the puppet who handles puppeteer. You have to treat handling a puppet like accompanying a child's first steps. The puppet rises up really gently, he stands like this, he watches like that, and it gives joy," Yaya Coulibaly explains.
In modern Africa, the puppets are popular with young people, and used to encourage discussion about social issues.
Yaya Coulibaly created his puppet and theatre company, the Sogolon Troupe in 1980.
He employs between 10 and 15 people to promote Mali's puppet tradition.
The master puppeteer uses techniques from Mali and around the world into his performances. He has performed in Europe and the United States with his puppet troupe.
Giant puppets, masks, dancers, live music and ancient and modern history are used in the performances.
Yaya Coulibaly gets inspiration from traditional folk tales, and French colonial history and also modern life in Mali.
"The Hunter and the Lion is a traditional show from the hunter's tales. It's not a tale, it's a real story. It's a show of initiation, integration, tolerance and awareness. It's very important because in order to solve society's problems, one needs to expose them. I think it's the social function of puppets," he says.
With his puppet theatre, Yaya Coulilbaly is trying to teach a new generation of Malinese children to dance to the rhythm of their ancestors.
Bamako - 14 June, 2012
1.
