One of those myths was that it was a mass suicide. That people willingly stepped forward. Whereas in fact, they were manipulated by Jones at the end. The shooting of Congressman Ryan was used to convince Jones' followers that they had no out, no place to go, that someone was going to come in (go) after them. Various aerials of Jonestown compound with hundreds of bodies on ground\u003cbr/\u003eThirty-years on, survivors of an epic murder-suicide ritual at a compound of Jim Jones' Peoples Temple in Jonestown, northwestern Guyana, remember the more than 900 people who perished there.\u003cbr/\u003eThe killing began during a fact-finding mission to Guyana's jungle by United States Congressman Leo Ryan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe congressman from San Mateo, California, had travelled to Guyana to investigate a remote commune built by Jones' California-based People's Temple.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Ryan and some church members tried to leave, a team of assassins opened fire.\u003cbr/\u003eRyan was fatally shot as he boarded his plane, making him the first congressman slain while holding office. \u003cbr/\u003eFour others, including three newsmen, were also killed.\u003cbr/\u003eAssociated Press reporter Tim Reiterman was among that group of journalists with the Congressman Ryan.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was wounded but survived the assassination attempt.\u003cbr/\u003eJust hours before, Reiterman, who then worked for the San Francisco Examiner newspaper, had toured the compound and interviewed Jones himself.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says members of the church quietly approached the journalists and two members had passed a note expressing their need for help.\u003cbr/\u003eReiterman says a powerful wind tore through the central pavilion on the compound, and the skies dumped torrents, as he spoke to the founder of Peoples Temple.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the coming minutes, members of People's Temple gathered around the pavilion, surrounded us and where we were,\" Reiterman said on Tuesday.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"All eyes were on Jones, looking for visible cues, some sort of leadership or guidance about what was going to happen next. I think he knew what was going to happen next,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBy their wiles or happenstance, scores of temple members escaped the events of November 18, 1978. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the time the airstrip gunmen returned to Jonestown from the Ryan assassination, Jones had gathered his people in the pavilion and had begun preparing them for the end. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen potassium cyanide-laced Grape Flavour Aid was brought forward, Jones wanted the children to go first, sealing everyone's fate because the parents and elders would have no reason to live. \u003cbr/\u003eWith armed guards encircling everyone and with youngsters bawling, medical staff members with syringes squirted poison down the throats of babies.\u003cbr/\u003eLooking back, Reiterman said he believes it was not a mass suicide and thinks the members were manipulated by Jones.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The shooting of Congressman Ryan was used to convince Jones' followers that they had no out, no place to go, that someone was going to come in after them. And, then he said, 'Let's take the potion\" Reiterman said. \u003cbr/\u003eYulanda Williams was about 12-years old when she began attending temple services in San Francisco with her parents. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1977, as news media were beginning to investigate disciplinary thrashings and other abuse in the temple, Jones summoned Williams and her husband to Guyana.\u003cbr/\u003eUpon arrival in Jonestown, the couple felt deceived as it was far from the paradise Jones described. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople were packed into metal roofed cabins, sleeping on bunks without mattresses and using outhouses with newsprint for toilet paper. \u003cbr/\u003eThere were armed guards, and Jones warned that deserters would encounter venomous snakes and hostile natives.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause her husband was an attorney whose skills could be better used elsewhere, they were permitted to leave after a few weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eMonths before the horrific end, Williams and her family cut ties with the temple.\u003cbr/\u003eEventually, Williams joined the San Francisco Police Department, but she told no one about her temple involvement for a decade because she feared losing her job.\u003cbr/\u003eThirty years later, Williams places blame for the massacre squarely on Jones, claiming he had \"917 chances to stop the annihilation, and yet he continued to witness people dying one by one.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePeoples Temple sprang from the heartland in the 1950s. \u003cbr/\u003eJones built an interracial congregation in Indianapolis through passionate Pentecostal preaching and courageous calls for racial equality. \u003cbr/\u003eMoving his flock to California, the minister transformed his church into a leftist social movement with programs for the poor.\u003cbr/\u003ePolitical work by his followers elevated Jones to prominence in liberal Democratic circles by the late 1970s. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was head of San Francisco's public housing commission when media scrutiny and legal problems spurred his retreat to Jonestown for what would be his last stand.\u003cbr/\u003eOne enduring mystery is who shot Jones in the head.\u003cbr/\u003eEvidence suggests that he shot himself at the pavilion or was killed by a close aide, as he had planned.\u003cbr/\u003eThe unidentifiable or unclaimed bodies of more than 400 of Jonestown's dead, most of them children, are interred in a mass grave at an Oakland Cemetery overlooking San Francisco Bay.\u003cbr/\u003eEach year a memorial service is conducted on November
