Sign outside clinic reading: (English) \"Rashmi Diagnostics\"\u003cbr/\u003eA recent spate of cases of female foeticide in eastern India has once again focused attention on the skewed sex ratios in India and the cultural preference for sons rather than daughters.\u003cbr/\u003eA police investigation into female foeticide in Nayagarh town was launched following the discovery of five female foetuses at abandoned house in July.\u003cbr/\u003eShortly after this discovery police found plastic bags stuffed with tiny skulls and other body parts in an abandoned well in the town.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigating officers believe the finding could be the remains of aborted female foetuses or newborn baby girls who were killed because their families wanted a son.\u003cbr/\u003eA nearby medical clinic is under investigation. Police believe the clinic was using ultrasonography machines to determine the sex of unborn babies - a practice that is illegal in India but remains widespread.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice have carried out raids on diagnostic clinics unlicensed ultra-sound machines have been confiscated.\u003cbr/\u003eAbortion was legalised in India in 1971 and the practice is viewed as a way to curb population growth.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, prenatal sex determination tests and abortions on the basis of gender are both illegal in India.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the law clearly has its loopholes, activists say the female foeticide issue stems from India's deep rooted social beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eIn India sons have far more status in a family than daughters - they do not require expensive wedding dowries and can light their parents' funeral pyres. \u003cbr/\u003eSocial Activist, Namrata Chadha, said the strong desire for families to have a son is the reason the female foeticide is \"rampant\" in Indian society.\u003cbr/\u003eThe advent of sex-determination tests made aborting female foetuses easier, and the practice is cheap.\u003cbr/\u003eA sex-determination ultrasound can cost less than 15 US dollars and an abortion just 25 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eA United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) report in 2006 estimated that seven-thousand girls go unborn each day in India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe result is a gender ratio increasingly skewed in favour of men.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to D Narendra Kumar, the state programme officer for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in 2001 there were 927 women for every one-thousand men - a decrease from 945 women for every one-thousand men in 1991.\u003cbr/\u003eActivists say there have been few prosecutions of doctors or ultrasound technicians in cases of female foeticide and more stringent punishment is required.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You cannot stop abortions because it is legalised in our country but you can vigil, you can would gradually be choked off by education, legislation and the spread of India's middle class.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as that educated Indian middle class has blossomed over the past two decades, and laws protecting girls have been strengthened, the numbers have only grown worse.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a nation that decades ago elected a female prime minister and where the incumbent president is a woman -
